The Merriam Webster defines the term monster as “a person of unnatural or extreme ugliness, deformity, wickedness, or cruelty.” This definition could remind the readers of the screen play of Monster written by Walter Dean Myers. The story revolves around death, gangs, prison, fear and guilt. Monster is the story of a 16-year-old boy named Steve Harmon from Harlem who is on trial for possible accessory to murder. Harmon is on trial for a being a possible accomplice to a murder.
This book is about a ten year old boy named Alonzo King. Alonzo is fascinated by monsters and the show monsters at midnight. No one in his town believes in monsters but him and a teacher named Mr. Blake. His birthday is on Halloween and he wants to be known as the boy of a thousand faces. He paints his face and takes pictures with a Polaroid camera to see how many different faces that he can make.
A monster is a daunting individual. Someone who is mischievous or evil in nature. If one is expressed as a monster, they are taken to be as cruel or frightening. Steve Harmon in Walter Dean Meyers,’ Monster, is called a monster for being involved in criminal acts. His lawyer was Kathy O’Brien.

That is how I look at Halloween. Unfortunately here in Latvia they are not into this holiday and only children at school dress up but afterwards don’t go trick or treating and young adults enjoy going a bit crazy in the pubs in Riga. In the U.S. it is common to see carved pumpkins most everywhere and in some other parts of the world as well. There are also gourd-like orange fruits that get carved with ghoulish face and illuminated by candles.
Halloween and Day of the Dead, despite their similarities, are very different. They are similar because they both have sugary treats and they are different because they are celebrated in different ways, and the preparation of the holidays are different. Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, and Central America where people celebrate their ancestors souls and bring them some of their favorite things to their graves and throw many parties. Halloween is a day when children go out in costumes to trick-or-treat for candies and other sugary items, people also setup decorations outside their houses that look go along with the holiday.

The root word for “monster” is “monstrum”, which means that which reveals or warns. A monster is the product or symbol of a culture from which the monster comes from. They are more than their physical body and entertainment value that plays into these stories of the monstrous figure we read about or watch in movies or television.
However, Halloween also grew increasingly commercialized in the 1980s, when its popularity among adults increased. In 1982, with the launch of Halloween seasonal shops, extravagant decorations received a significant boost, and they later made an appearance in pharmacy stores and supermarkets as well. In an effort to reverse his October slump, Joseph Marver, a garment store owner from San Francisco, decided to start selling costumes that year. Little did he know, the company took off. His sales skyrocketed once he leased a temporary booth in a mall the next year.
