The invention of the telegraph was a major change for railroads as it made communication faster and made railroads become more popular and cost efficient. In the website “History of the U.S. Telegraph Industry”, “by transmitting information quickly over long distances, the telegraph helped the growth in the railroads, combined financial and commodity markets, and reduced information costs between firms”. The information from the website implies that now that the telegraph has been involved in railroads, information has cost less because information travel has now been more efficient. Since both the telegraph and the railroad needed parts from each other, and each could provide for each other, then the function of each worked efficiently. The telegraph was a very important step in the right direction for the improvement of railroads. People have only really seen the railroads after the telegraph, but have not seen what it was like before the telegraph. In the website “History of the U.S. Telegraph Industry”, “before the use of the telegraph, the U.S. railroad system was single-tracked, and trains ran on a time-interval system”. Before the telegraph, railroads had seemed as if they were less popular, because the railroads did not have good communication. The railroads also had to run on a time-interval system, as said on the website. It must have been way harder to have run on just the clock instead of having direct and instant communication with railroads like in the present day.
