The History of the Samurai When people think of samurai they don’t think of all the blood, sweat and tears it took to become one. The samurai were some of the most skilled and disciplined warriors of all time because of the way they presented themselves inside and out of battle, this can be illustrated in the way they trained, lived and fought. They completely revolutionized the way all warriors would train and act after that point. Being a Samurai was instilled into a child almost as soon as they are born, “From childhood, the Samurai were trained to self-discipline and a sense of duty.”(“Samurai” Wikipedia) this means that they almost completely skipped out on their childhood and went straight to their training and practices. One of the main things that was practiced was the teachings of the Bushido Code, which were the rules and regulations they lived by that emphasized one’s honor. Although the Bushido Code was one of the main practices Samurais were still greatly influenced by the teachings of Buddha and Zen. One being the Katana the Samurais most recognizable weapon and trusted long sword. The other was the Wakizashi a much smaller sword with a very broad blade, together the two are known as “ dashio meaning “large and small”.”(“The Samurai Way” National Geographic). Carrying two swords of varying sizes made the Samurai an extremely efficient warrior, when range was needed the Katana was used but for much closer combat and speed the Wakizashi was perfect.
