An auteur is essentially a director who exterts the maximum amount of control over a production. Almost like a dictator, but in a good way, because without them the film would lack clear vision, stylization, and unique perspective. Francois Truffaut, an important well-respected director, was one of the first people to intoduce the theory. Because Francois Truffaut decided to drop out of school, he took it upon himself to get his own version of a film education. By watching three movies a day and reading two books a week, he was able to give himself a better understanding of cinema.
Citizen Kane by Orson Welles is a cinematic classic, released in 1941. Citizen Kane challenged traditional narrative and technical elements of classic Hollywood cinema. Kane was narrated by several people that include their take on Kane’s life. The story unfolds by many flashbacks and is told by different perspectives over the years through different narrations. Charles Foster Kane was a millionaire, head of newspapers and died saying “rosebud”.
The Auteur Theory, a theory formulated by François Truffaut states the idea that the true author of a film is the director. The Auteur Theory revolves around how the director leaves an implicit mark on the film and because of this cinematic, literary, or thematic signature or motif, they are credited as the author of the film. While there are numerous people involved in the production of a film, with some directors it is truly prominent who can be described as the author of the film such as with Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks, renown comical director and screenwriter is one instance of the undeniability of the Auteur Theory. Despite Mel Brook’s complete involvement in his films, writing, co-writing, directing, and even starring in many of his films,

Alfred Hitchcock’s distinctive style can be seen in both movies. Young Charlie (shadow of the doubt) and L.B Jefferies are both similar, in which they are both trapped.
: For my presentation I have chosen to examine Steven Spielberg and what stylistic features he uses to make himself considered as an auteur. An auteur is a director that has a unique style in filming and has complete control of the production process of the film. The three films that I have chosen to focus on are E.T. Film authorship refers to the directors who permeated their films with their distinctive personal vision and uniqueness through the use of film style. The value of a film is said to be determined according to what the director produce and his personal style. In film authorship, the influence of the director can be seen throughout all his work. Ideally, a person can watch a film without previously knowing its director and be able to identify the person who directed the film just by analyzing the film style. The audience are often given signs and information throughout the play of the film to know the producer of the film.

Some key topics the class discussed about for Shadow of a Doubt Hitchcock’s use of Dutch angle when Charlies was in his room as he’s freaking out about being discovered. This was compared to the Dutch angle used in The 39 Steps and the scene with Mr. Memory. Also discussed was how Uncle Charlie’s arrival in Santa Rosa lead to the emasculating of Joe. How he was reduced to sitting at the kid table while Uncle Joe got to read his paper along with Charlie humiliating him at his work.

“Citizen Kane” is a tale of the “Charles Foster Kane”. “Citizen Kane” was one among the major controversial movies continually built up. Kane was one of the most controversial films ever made. Hearst, affronted from his representation, presented RKO a diminutive chance to wipe out the movie. When that attempt did not work, newspapers of the Hearst go aboard on an operation of denouncement in opposition to Welles, therefore demonstrating that the dishonesty of the press and the condemnation of the power in film were specifically the aim.
This isn’t the most realistic, as there is usually more than one individual working on a film, but the director is considered to be the guiding force. An auteur is one that has a distinct style and is one that can create films that are both commercially and aesthetically pleasing. A good example of an auteur film is The Godfather. Sarris states that an auteur is one that has a that can create both commercially and aesthetically pleasing films, and Coppola transformed a story fit for a low-budget gangster film, into something far more.
Before this markable period, film authors were generally self-directing with open stylistic aspirations and full management over their films. The pioneering articles of Cahiers du Cinéma were a validation of mainstream genre cinema as an art form. This French magazine claimed that in order to create art there must be an artist, hence the need for an auteur, which the word means an author in French. This encouraged directors to strive for their ideal vision on the work by extending the weight of their role as a supervisor.
