An auteur is essentially a director who exterts the maximum amount of control over a production. Almost like a dictator, but in a good way, because without them the film would lack clear vision, stylization, and unique perspective. Francois Truffaut, an important well-respected director, was one of the first people to intoduce the theory. Because Francois Truffaut decided to drop out of school, he took it upon himself to get his own version of a film education. By watching three movies a day and reading two books a week, he was able to give himself a better understanding of cinema.
Citizen Kane by Orson Welles is a cinematic classic, released in 1941. Citizen Kane challenged traditional narrative and technical elements of classic Hollywood cinema. Kane was narrated by several people that include their take on Kane’s life. The story unfolds by many flashbacks and is told by different perspectives over the years through different narrations. Charles Foster Kane was a millionaire, head of newspapers and died saying “rosebud”.
The Auteur Theory, a theory formulated by François Truffaut states the idea that the true author of a film is the director. The Auteur Theory revolves around how the director leaves an implicit mark on the film and because of this cinematic, literary, or thematic signature or motif, they are credited as the author of the film. While there are numerous people involved in the production of a film, with some directors it is truly prominent who can be described as the author of the film such as with Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks, renown comical director and screenwriter is one instance of the undeniability of the Auteur Theory. Before this markable period, film authors were generally self-directing with open stylistic aspirations and full management over their films. The pioneering articles of Cahiers du Cinéma were a validation of mainstream genre cinema as an art form. This French magazine claimed that in order to create art there must be an artist, hence the need for an auteur, which the word means an author in French. This encouraged directors to strive for their ideal vision on the work by extending the weight of their role as a supervisor.
