Humor plays many different roles and purposes throughout the novel “ The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. To begin, one of the main roles humor plays throughout the story is to hold your attention and keep you hooked to the story. This is shown with the wide variety of humor shown throughout the text and interactions between characters. Some of the types of humor that is largely used throughout are dark, irony, and self deprecation. It enhances the prompt by making the reader have to think about the jokes and understand what they are referring to, this could be call backs to earlier in the story, or foreshadowing for events to come. This type of humor is shown in the quote “Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.” (HGTTG, Adams).This quote engages the reader into dissecting the prompt to understand the analogy, and shows humor by comparing outer space to a peanut. Finally, humor engages the reader through laughter which makes them enjoy the prompt more. Good character development and character personality is one of the most important parts of a humorous story. Humor is so important because without it, the story would be dry and boring to read, causing people to not want to put time and effort into reading it if they won't enjoy it. One of the quotes that show character personality is “This must be Thursday,' said Arthur to himself, sinking low over his beer. 'I never could get the hang of Thursdays.”(HGTTG, Adams). This quote shows that Arthor is a shallow, dull and sadder character in the story showing his disapproval in something as small as a day in a week. One quote that shows character development “So this is it," said Arthur, "We are going to die." "Yes," said Ford, "except... no! Wait a minute!" He suddenly lunged across the chamber at something behind Arthur's line of vision. "What's this switch?" he cried. "What?
