On A&E’s popular television show, Hoarders, I evaluated the people that were starring in the particular episode called Sandi and Vivian. In this episode, Sandi is known around town as Mrs. Clause because of her extreme gift hoarding which is causing her to go bankrupt from buying so many gifts. On the other hand, Vivian is being threatened to loose custody of her grandchildren because of her hoarding addiction. After watching the opening of this television show, it really grasped my attention and made me curious to see why these people were hoarders, even when consequences were at stake. Sandi’s issues are due to her excessive hoarding and buying.
For example episode 11 when a guy named Jason Robert physically attacks a girl named Megan in front of an audience , he behavior is considered deviance because he harms another person. Attacking another person and stalking is prime example that he is different from most people. Another example is episode season 15 episode 10 when detective Benson attacked and kidnapped by a murder. This broke into her apartment and held her captive for four days where he would tie her up and make her watch as he did unspeakable things to another. His behavior would be considered as deviance because what he does is unsocial and it violates what is considered normal in today’s society.
For example, buying things you don’t need like cashmere sweaters, cute shirts and leopard skin beds, it’s a waste of a lot of money. For example, my family and I have a family friend named Stephanie. She has 3 boxers and she buys everything for them like lot’s of food, veterinary care, and accessories. She literally buys so much food for her dogs that she doesn’t buy any food or anything for herself. She has no food in her refrigerator.
Deviant Behavior In my view, prostitution, pornography, and gambling are deviant behaviors. The three issues are undesirable and socially disruptive in the eyes of other people within the community. That is, many individuals perceive them as unethical acts, which goes against the social norms. Furthermore, the perpetrators of these activities also find themselves disturbed, and they feel unhappily disadvantaged.
Deviance Sociologists general defines deviance as “an action that is perceived as violating a society’s or groups cultural norm”. Deviance can be perceived in many different ways. Vegetarians and Muslims are both groups that do not consume meat. Although these groups are not breaking the law. Their behavior is different than what is accepted to be normal.
After reading these articles I garnered a greater insight on what deviance is and how it is formed. According to the Outsiders reading, deviance is essentially a label that is put on a person of whom commits an act or exhibits behaviors that stray from what is normal or expected. These people are therefore also labeled as “outsiders”. Outsiders in that they are seen as those who are to be placed outside of a certain group do to their deviant behaviors. There exist many views of deviance.
Deviance is categorized as a violation of cultural norms. In order for one to express deviance, they must act out against societal norms which are known as expectations and rules that "lead the way" for how an individual should act. Therefore, its much easier to depict from there that mostly one's society is what ultimately differentiates what the rules and expectations are as well as what it needed to break those rules that they have somewhat instilled and ingrained into our daily lives. To add, due to society and different eras of socialization deviant behavior evolves over time.
For example Deviance-which means “any behavior or physical appearance that is socially challenged or condemned, because it departs from the norm and expectations from a group”(Ferrante).
Veblen calls such types of consumption ‘conspicuous consumption’ and ‘conspicuous leisure’. A thorough summary of Veblen’s fourth chapter ‘Conspicuous Consumption’ will first be given. The Encyclopedia Britannica defines ‘conspicuous consumption’ as a “…the practice by consumers of using goods of a higher quality or in greater quantity than might be considered necessary in practical terms” (Phillips, 2014). The aim of such a practice is to advance, establish or maintain one’s reputation in order to achieve a higher social status or prove that you belong in one.
What we consume, how we consume it and why do we consume what we consume, are all questions that have been raised within Sociology 306 at Queen’s University by professor Martin Hand. I will aim to provide to this dialogue by explaining and defining Thorstein Veblen’s theories of conspicuous consumption and emulation as well as discussing their relevance to the questions addressed by professor Hand. In addition, providing a report of my recent monitored consumption habits and how the two theories listed above help to understand them. Accordingly, I will conclude this response with a brief discussion as to whether or not these theories are relatable to my consumption habits. Conspicuous consumption is a term coined by Thorstein Veblen in The Theory of the Leisure Class in the early 20th century (Dunn 2008: 36).
For cultures that consider behaviors like murder and rape to be honorable, this will draw that attention back to how different cultures or times defined deviant. For instance, Japanese's kamikaze was not a deviant in Japan because it was considered as an act of honor to the country. People that came from that culture will think that 'kamikaze' is an act of honor and it is not a deviant but for people that came from the different culture will think differently. The act of committing suicide is known to be deviant but the standard of judging may vary for that situation in that culture. They knew suicide is going against the norm but because they thought of it as an act of honor, they disregard the action as an act of deviant.
According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.
My goal as an artist is to allow opportunities for those in low income brackets, so they may have a form of expression that can help them release energy into a positive space. I want to teach my art and become involved in the teaching and choreographing process so people can use it to help them with daily struggles and provide a community that welcomes creativity, flow and positive outlooks on life. Bob Fosse a famous choreographer once said “choreography is writing on your feet”, I look to this quote for inspiration as well as a definition of how I believe dance can be used because Dance was escapism for me in dark times of my life and It helped me cope with a copious amount of mental health issues. Dance to me is telling my story while
Deviance is any behavior that violates social norms and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society. Deviance can be criminal or noncriminal. Media helps us frame the way we think, act, and choose. Children have growing brains
Many groups or cultures have different views on what is considered deviant.
