Many important historical events have become a part of mainstream media due to Hollywood’s impact through film. How much script is based on fact and research vs. Hollywood hype? Throughout this essay I will describe the events of the Scottish Wars of Independence and the life of William Wallace. Much of these events are represented in the film Braveheart, yet many people are still shocked when they learn the truth of what actually happened. My interest in this topic began with my first viewing of the movie. My strong Irish and Scottish heritage solidified this interest. During my research, I discovered more facts about the history leading up to the wars. The leadership of Scotland had a large impact on the cause of the wars. A great deal of casualties were suffered in this war making it one of the most globally influential events of this time period. Overall, this series of occurrences taught the world that the Scottish would not be taken over without unrest.

The Scottish had peace for five years before England tried to take control again. This continued on for many years with the sons of Robert the Bruce and Edward I fighting battles that their ancestors had started. Everything that happened in the First Scottish Wars of Independence set the stage for the next years of battle.
Overall the effects on the Scottish and British civilizations are tremendous. For a world superpower to see their neighbors winning battles against your greatest generals it had to have struck fear and panic across England. On the other hand, the Scottish must have had much pride in saying that they have won against a global superpower. They even attacked the British on their own soil, which was no easy task. I hypothesize that the Scottish burghs and clans came closer together despite the corruption. In times of war people depend on each other, even if it means allying with an enemy to defeat the greater
