My thoughts on A Study in Scarlet: Detective literature is not something that everyone enjoys reading. It is a very challenging genre to read because of the different takes it has on the reader. While reading A Study in Scarlet, I was able to see who Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson really were. Not only being able to learn how they got along with being each other’s roommates but in general. I never really was able to get hooked on one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s books until now and I am sadden I didn’t read more books from him sooner. I was able to learn so much through Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson and their opinions on detective literature. He holds himself to a very high standard because he knows he is the only one capable of solving these mysterious crimes. He observes the crimes and the people involved in them as a whole by not allowing his personal emotions get involved with his findings. This makes him a superb detective because he is able to look at things in a broader spectrum rather than a pre judged one. He also states in the story that, "It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence. It biases the judgment." (Page,) Holmes tends to reason on the behalf that everyone is innocent until they are proven guilty, which is by far one of the best traits that a character such as him can have within this story. Holmes deductions skills are highly looked at because is able to reason backwards. Stated in Chapter 7, "In solving a problem of this sort, the grand thing is to be able to reason backwards. That is a very useful accomplishment, and a very easy one, but people do not practice it much. In the every-day affairs of life it is more useful to reason forwards, and so the other comes to be neglected… (Page, 1345)
