In the most cliff hanging, interesting, and heart wrenching book The Hound of the Baskervilles, there are two detectives by the names Holmes and Watson and these two men are the same and different in multiple ways. Holmes is a leading character and Watson is the follower. Holmes knows of all of his expertise and Watson does not show it as much. Yet, both detectives are precise, observant, and exceptional at what they do. These two detectives have distinctive differences that are present and can be shown in how they work alone and around each other, their overall attitude and personality, and finally in their different responses to the same situation. Holmes works very exact, he is a passionate leader and worker.In the book you can tell Holmes is a precise worker by the way he spends his time analyzing clues. A worthy example of this is in the beginning of the story when the two are examining the stick. “But, tell me, Watson, what do you make of our visitor’s stick? SInce we have been so unfortunate as to miss him and have no notion of his errand,” (2). Holmes looks very closely at the stick and makes detailed observations. Watson is an assistive worker and he follows what Holmes does and looks to Holmes for support. In the book Watson is always at Holmes’ side in different parts of the process of solving the mystery, like the examination of the stick. “Really, Watson, you excel yourself,” (3) While Holmes is finding important details Watson is at his side assisting him. Holmes is experienced so he does not have as much amazement to situations as Watson will have and he is intelligent so he picks up on things quickly. Throughout the book where Watson will show excitement about different topics Holmes will act as if it is a normal phenomenon he sees everyday. Watson, almost the opposite of Holmes, shows how enthusiastic and excited he becomes when clues are revealed or when interesting facts arise. Like Holmes, Watson is also very intelligent which allows him to recognize material quickly. When something exciting and important in the case arises Watson shows his enthusiasm even when Holmes doesn’t; However, both of them have a deep passion for what they do. An example for both sides from the book is when Watson finds the hut on the moor and hears footsteps behind him he fears of his life but Holmes is the man who had been staying in the hut. “For a moment or two I sat breathless, hardly able to believe my ears. Then my senses and my voice came back to me, while a crushing weight of responsibility seemed in an instant to be lifted from my soul” (179). This shows that Watson is laid back most of the time but when something he is unsure about happens he overreacts more than Holmes.
