Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Kids :Summary In “Our Tired, Our Poor, Our kids”(2001), Anna Quindlen claims that “There are many homeless mothers and children”(332).Quindlen addresses this issue by needing to find homes for many children the past month (“thousands”) ,as well for those families that wait by their belongings until found a room to sleep. The population of homelessness people isn’t decreasing it’s increasing rapidly. She reveals these problems in order to inform people the outrages numbers of homeless families ,and also “explains some of the effects of homelessness on children,emphasizes the importance of affordable housing,and touches on the effects of welfare reform on homelessness”(329).
Throughout history bias and tunnel mindedness has been demonstrated by all, whether it be during the holocaust, wars, famous speakers, religion disputes, terrorist attacks and more. Almost everyone, including America, tends to tell their side of the story, like we are always the heros. When in reality it is virtually impossible to be correct 100% of the time. This quote demonstrates this perfectly.
Homelessness is usually a result of several of complicated issues. First, domestic and family violence is considered to be the most common reason why people become homeless. Domestic and family violence is that one person uses abuse and/or violence to control his/her spouse or other family members through fear (Domestic Violence Prevention Centre, 2016). Therefore, victims prefer to stay outside all day in order to avoid being at home which is considered as nightmare. Second, financial difficulty is another major cause for homelessness.
Homeless youth are always dealing with poor nutrition, victimization, substance use, and abuse. Unfortunately the services provided are very limited and cannot help a huge chunk of the homeless youth. Homeless youth experience more substance abuse and drug addiction than non-homeless youth, this causes them to be mentally unstable and unable to be a functioning member of society. There are many temporary services provided such as shelters, drop-ins, meal programs, literacy improvements, and counselling programs; although these are available and there to help the youth, they are all flawed in their own ways. What the government does not take into consideration is the long term solutions to put youth in poverty to an end.

Millions of people including families ,children, elder, babies , veterans live day after day without water ,food or a roof over their heads. The number of homeless, families with children and elder has considerably over the past decade or so. They are together the fast, growing portion of the homeless population. There are together almost 40% of all people who are homeless.
Homeless in America has been growing over the past 20-25 years. over a million people are homeless all over the world. 643,067 people experiencing homelessness of any given second. Most people are spending the night either in homeless shelters or in some sort of short-term transitional housing. Slightly more than a third are living in cars or under bridges or are in some other way living unsheltered.
The main reason is always because of their parent or parents. Which brings me to the fact that generally, “A typical sheltered family is composed of a single mother with two or three children, often younger than six years of age” according to Ellen Bassuk in the article Ending Child Homelessness in America. With all this moving place to place affects the child now and their future. “Research indicates that homelessness and residential mobility leads to poor school performance, repeating grades, dropping out, and lower rates of high school graduation” (Bassuk). With that being said why isn’t this the government doing more for child homelessness?
These factors include, but are not limited to, lack of affordable housing, economic insecurity, behavioral health, etc. Research has found that the main contributing factors for children living in homeless families are the lack of affordable housing, poverty, and domestic violence (Aratani, 2009). Similarly, mental illness, substance abuse, and lack of affordable housing are the top contributing factors of homelessness among unaccompanied youth (Aratani, 2009). In addition to analyzing the factors that can cause homelessness, the article explores the impact that homelessness can have on youth. For example, homelessness can often lead to food insecurity since food supplies can be scarce, which can then have a negative impact on the child/youth’s overall health.
