Ms. Carlene Martinez was promoted to a GAIN Services Worker position effective 09/16/2017. Summary of your findings The Chicago community, similar to many, faces an ongoing complication with the homeless population. On the city’s end, Chicago struggles to provide shelter for the estimated 82,000 street occupants. While handouts and donations are an obsoletely helpful gesture, the issue stands prominent due to the lack of plotting for additional access for housing due to the heavily populated area. In attempts to end the homeless predicament, the state of Chicago has developed numerous programs and government funded plans to provide aid and help find shelter.
Morehouse School of Medicine is an appealing option for pursuing my medical education. When reading Morehouse’s mission statement, improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities grasped my attention. My clinical experiences revolve around communities that are underserved, and sharing the same mission as Morehouse is key to becoming the physician I aspire to be. One of the things that stood out to me about Morehouse is the student run Good Samaritan Health Center. I am very interested about being involved with God Samaritan, because it is akin to the Siloam Family Health Center that I volunteer at, and it is an embodiment of Morehouse’s mission.

Disease and mortality are greatest in the homeless, there has “been a 51% increase in the number of patients age 50 or older between 2008 and 2014 (Healthcare).” With these increasing numbers, the growing need for advanced care planning in the homeless is becoming more relevant. Homeless Americans are some of the most desperate citizens in need of medical coverage due to how poverty negatively affects their health. According to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), “Many homless people in America suffer from serious health challenges including: Mental health, substance abuse, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, liver disease, and hypertension”. These are very serious medical issues, and it can be extremely difficult for homeless people to get help on these issues due to their unemployed status. USICH reports have also shown that, “Homeless people rely on emergency room visits and uncompensated hospital care.” The results are this are not only dangerous for the homeless, but they also have adverse effects on all American systems.
There are over 600,000 homeless people in America today. This has become a big issue over time that needs attention. No one likes to see people in need, struggling to make a living. Homelessness in America is constantly being talked about, but no one makes a move to help all of those people who need it.
