Dennis P. Culhane’s “path-breaking” study of turnover rates in shelters in New York City and Philadelphia, which produced an unduplicated count of the actual number of homeless people in city shelter systems over a period of time, revealed that three percent of Philadelphia’s population used the public shelter system between 1990 and 1992, and that three percent of New York’s population received shelter during the same period. The work of Culhane’s and others conclusively demonstrated that homelessness was a much more widespread problem than the government had previously acknowledged. A recent study now estimates that between 700,000 to 800,000 people are homeless each night and that between 2.3 to 3.5 million people are homeless each year.

People who are living on the streets face many struggles such as lacking necessities, safety and income but also, many people tend to overlook that they are being discriminated. Frequently, they are ignored and neglected by society because of their housing status and stereotypes they are given. The cartoon below directs the attention on both perspectives of homeless people and the public. Editorial cartoonist, Phil Hands illustrated this cartoon for the Wisconsin State Journal and his other publications have shown up in the Newsweek and USA Today articles. Phil was born in Syracuse, New York in 1980 but grew up in Detroit where he found many inspirations for his illustrations.

Part One The amount of people who are living in poverty are supposedly people with darker skin colors, than that of many Caucasian people. People with dark skin colors are more likely to have less resources or come from areas of poverty. The rate which living cost rising, is also causing homelessness in King County, with less affordable places to live. Another reason someone may be homeless, is due to a temporary crisis.
We see them as a crowd, we call them the homeless, as if it tells who they are. What most forget is that they are also people. These “people” with social disabilities or financial problems are abandoned by society and become homeless on the streets and although many believe they don’t owe anyone help. Homelessness is a very huge problem that America has come to face. Millions of people, including children, families, veterans, and the elderly live day after day without food, water, or a roof over their heads.
Runs past Hahnemann hospital at any time of day often result in two visuals: physicians and homeless people, with an emphasis on the 'and' as I've never seen the two groups interact. One morning as a member of Back On My Feet (a man from Africa with an impressive ability to remember names and faces) and myself ran past three homeless people, two sleeping on the sidewalk and one walking in circles, and towards city hall, I was struck with the thought of what it must be like for formerly or currently homeless members of BOMF to see other homeless people in the street, many of whom appear to be high and distressed. As we ran back toward the starting point, we passed physicians making their way to the hospital. In that moment, the bridging of two worlds seemed apparent and multilayered. Here I was, a medical student, seeing my own future in the young physicians who hurried past; here was a formerly homeless man potentially seeing his former self in the people we passed.
Fewer families are found with the chronically homeless as over time children have been turned over to relatives or child welfare systems. Clearly a goal here would be to reach and assist individuals
Based on my interview the stereotypical image of homelessness is valid. The three respondents that were interviewed are between the age of 23, 24, and 72. Women tend to have an in depth emotional stories, while men have violent stories before they become homeless. The two hot topics that was constantly being brought up throughout the interview is others perceiving homeless people are either a drug addict or alcoholic. Respondent one and two are females, while respondent three is a male.
The subject of homelessness is not universally discussed in society because many people are either ignorant or unwilling to get involved to help. Although it is taboo, every day people are faced with or see homelessness. Many times driving under freeway passes or through highly populated cities, the homeless population can be seen everywhere. California has the densest homeless population in the United States, which is Skid Row in Los Angeles. In the state of California, the effects of homelessness continue to be an ongoing challenge for not only citizens but law enforcement and elected officials.
One of the public health issues in my community, is homelessness. This is a problem for many communities throughout the country, but I see it on a regular basis in the Raleigh, North Carolina communities. There is currently a health crisis visible on the streets of our communities. There are homeless, men, women and children living in unbelievable conditions. Many of these people are suffering from a multitude of health issues.
Homelessness Homelessness is a big factor in the U.S and all around the world. More and more people everyday are becoming homeless. Yet not enough is being done to stop it, or make a big impact on it. 600,000 people in the U.S are homeless.
