The people of Europe treated the poor with sympathy and they presented them with small acts of kindness but some of the people of Europe also saw the poor as lazy.

In the novel entitled, The Help, race is a socially constructed concept. Jackson, Mississippi is an extremely segregated society where the majority of the white population creates rules that try to differentiate blacks from whites. However, there are a group of white individuals that stand for equality, which in turn could lead to danger amongst each other. Although Mississippi is the setting, seemingly different women joined together to change the way coloured maids were viewed. They set aside the false stereotypes of black individuals as well as white and spoke against it.

Up until the mid-19th century, attitudes towards poverty was dominated by elitist views. Just like the elitist themselves, people in poverty were expected to solely take care of themselves. Social or economic factors were not seen as one of the issues that caused poverty; however, it was rather seen as something people were born with- like a defect they were birth with. They believed poverty was caused by the bad habits of the poor; for instance, their preference for gambling and drinking or through their own simple laziness (The British Library, 2018). This is because many Victorians didn’t understand poverty entirely.
Common Stereotypes Everyone at one time or another will stereotype a person or persons based on other opinions and statements about individuals, through their lifetime. The elderly are associated with negativity and that they are not part of society as functioning. The stereotype of the elderly are that they are senile, have memory lapses, irritable, cranky, boring, grumpy, physically and mentally weak, debilitated and cognitively impaired. Stereotypes of Color, Race, or Ethnicity-Related Because cultures are different, individuals of color, race or an ethnic background are thought to be the same and value the same things. Stereotypes of race seem to belittle the population no matter the age or accomplishments.
The working poor are those who occupy minimum wage or low wage jobs, often lacking prestige and power. This group of people commonly work part-time and are rarely employed at a job for long enough to establish economic security. Since many of these jobs are physically demanding, those in the working class face a greater risk of going to the hospital – a cost that this class generally cannot afford. Furthermore, although the working poor struggle with low wages, many of them fail to qualify for welfare programs, making their economic status especially unstable and causing them to live on the edge (Marger 157). They often live paycheck-to-paycheck and one unpredictable event such getting ill or being fired from a job may cause them to fall into
Stereotypes. They have attached themselves to you since birth, determined on how you look, how you act, your nationality, or the most common factor, the color of your skin. However, it’s not entirely the general populus’ fault. We put labels based on what we see. Things like television shows and movies contribute to this; whether it be a hispanic man portrayed as being illegal, or an asian man portrayed as an owner of a laundromat.
Children inherit traits from each of their parents—whether their eye color or their height— we all get something. I inherited the determination and wisdom they carry in addition to physical traits. My mother taught me to work hard, and that will change your view of the world. People will look down on you for looking different and being different; they will judge you due to your race and financial status, I remember being young and watching my mother work for hours on end, only taking short breaks throughout the day, and readily continuing her job when she got home. She did this because of stereotypes—particularly, the belief that immigrants are lazy.
The constant bombardment of negative associations of minorities affects how the public views those within these groups. Unconsciously people are affected by these images even those within the Black community. A study in 2006 showed that Blacks that watched a lot of television tended to have more distrust for their neighbors, be less likely to join groups and have a negative attitude toward their neighbors than their, White counter parts viewing the same things. (Beaudoin & Thorson, 2006). These types of problems are only furthering the divide between racial groups.
America is certainly a rich country. But it contains a lot of people surviving on incomes more common in developing countries. How society chooses to treat these people is cause for concern. There is an elitist culture in America. If one doesn’t fit into this bubble of perfection - with the white picket fence, two kids and a dog - then you are often faced with an uphill battle.
Part One The amount of people who are living in poverty are supposedly people with darker skin colors, than that of many Caucasian people. People with dark skin colors are more likely to have less resources or come from areas of poverty. The rate which living cost rising, is also causing homelessness in King County, with less affordable places to live. Another reason someone may be homeless, is due to a temporary crisis.
Homelessness has affected many individuals throughout the United States and world. In 2014 the National Alliance to End Homelessness collected that “578,424 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States (“Snapshot of Homelessness"). Most individuals believe that most homeless individuals are single individuals, but “216,197 are people in families,” and “362,163 are individuals,” (“Snapshot of Homelessness"). Homelessness affects everyone, from families to individuals and veterans. In the veterans homeless population there is “currently over 2.2 million women Veterans in the United States, comprising approximately 10 percent of the Veteran population” (Hamilton).
