Human beings are reactive in nature. Throughout history, this fact had both aided and hurt us. Matthew Shepard was a case in which this tendency hurt us. On the night of October 6th, 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, brutally beaten, and robbed, tied to a fence and left to die. Once Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay, the town of Laramie reacted, mostly with love and support.
In her paper, How Paul Became the Straight Word: Protestant Biblicism and the Twentieth-Century Invention of Biblical Heteronormativity, Heather R. White argues that the modern biblical interpretation of heteronormativity, or the condemnation of anything not heterosexual and cisgender, is a modern conceptualization. Particularly in the first two paragraphs of the section “Homosexuality Comes Home to Roost” White explores the shift in biblical translations with the shifting medical and cultural knowledge surrounding homosexuality (White 297-298). In this section, White explains a tickle-down pattern in which 1940s culture impacted biblical rhetoric, and biblical rhetoric then impacted society. White explains that, as a result of new understandings surrounding “frameworks of sexual health,” perceptions and biblical interpretations began to
An article in the Slate magazine, “A Conservative Case for Marriage”, concern debate between the author and the public in Alabama. The Author William Saletan, discuss about the existence of Homosexual couples in public because all this time the existence of homosexuality couples looked bad by public. “What is a Homosexual?” written by Andrew Sullivan was a powerful article for me for the simple fact that, I have many homosexual friends and growing up with them and watching their struggle to fit in was extremely painful, heartbreaking but and the same time I am the lucky one that they chose to be themselves around. Andrews describes in his article what it was like to be the fifteen-year-old boy in the locker room and realizing for the first time that he is attracted to boys and he had to learn how to conceal how he was feeling in front of his peers. Andrews states, that the first homosexual lesson: that your survival depends upon self-concealment. Andrews Article focus on what it is like growing up in a heterosexual world as a homosexual teenager and how homosexuals learn at a young age how to conceal their sexuality.
Choices invade everyone’s brains daily, whether big or small. Choices can vary from whether to have a cookie or an apple to a career path. Some people want to have control over everything about them, so they want to choose their sexuality. Stephanie Fairyington, author of “The Gay Option,” identifies herself as being gay, so she brings an interesting viewpoint. She discusses the fact that being gay is a choice instead of a biological phenomenon.
The novel Giovanni’s Room, written by James Baldwin in 1956, is a compelling novel about the life of a young American man named David, who often has a hard time accepting himself has homosexual. He does everything in his power to try to prove to the world that he is a straight American man. Despite how David used to deny that he was homosexual, at the end of the novel he comes to terms with his homosexuality and accepts it a fact. David’s denial of his homosexuality is first seen when he was a teenager. For example, after he had his first sexual encounter with a boy named Joey, he felt ashamed, confused and guilty.
In Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, homosexuality and heterosexuality are depicted as sources of conflict that are influenced by societal norms which shape and influence relationships. The main character, David, pursues sexual relationships with both men and women while struggling to construct his own sexual identity. These scenes of sexual intimacy are used to illustrate ideas about how societal norms influence the most intimate of settings, while also demonstrating the conflict between perceived morals and personal desire. The contrast between heterosexual and homosexual acts in this novel work to create a greater understanding of the complexities surrounding each. Baldwin's depiction of sexual intimacy with both genders in Giovanni's Room offers a nuanced and complex portrayal of sexuality that cannot fully be defined by heterosexuality or homosexuality.
Similar to Ford, Huxley develops Sigmund Freud as a highly respected and admired figure in the World State. Citizens follow Freud’s beliefs about sexuality and infantile behavior by behaving wanton. People are expected to be promiscuous and have multiple partners at one time as those who only have one partner will be subjected to inquiries by the government. Freud, known as “Our Freud” to the World State, believed children were sexually attracted to their parents thus exposing the “dangers of family life” (Huxley 39). The World State disowned families so citizens would become detached and emotionless and therefore easier to manipulate.
Many conservatives see anything other than being attracted to the opposite sex a sin because of arguable biblical textual aspects. Biblical references are interoperated in accordance to one’s individualistic ideas and cannot be used as concrete evidence in any situation. There are points to the popular consensus among conservatives that peoples of sexual orientation other than between man and women are not considered
Those who are support same-sex marriage often argue that love is grounds enough for marriage, Regardless of sexual orientation(2 https://www.aclu.org/).Those who are against same sex marriage often tell their religious aspect, and viewpoints and concerns about the raising of children as the main reason for their opposition. The debate of same-sex marriage involves many legislative, cultural, religious, and family issues(3). Christian groups that argue for same-sex marriage believe that lesbian, and gay people were created by god and should have the same rights as heterosexual couples. Christian groups that argue against homosexuality often say that it is immoral, against gods will, and against human sexual goals which is to have kids. The Islamic faith openly rejects homosexuality telling the story of lot in Sodom as a condemnation of
He introduces the topic abruptly in his first chapter, “We Shouldn’t Even Be Having This Discussion” and soon delves right into one of the most outspoken arguments against homosexuality in the second chapter “God Said It, I Believe It, That Settles It” throughout his book he cites many other popular arguments using references not only to people who have made many of these arguments, but also the original sources that are claimed to have supported such arguments against homosexuality. Corvino is an Associate Professor and Chair of Philosophy at Wayne State University, and has traveled across the United States giving lectures and participating in debates on LGBT issues. Throughout his book, Corvino cites various arguments for and against homosexuality, using anything from biblical passages to quotes from significant debaters on the topic. He continues to break these down into their barest parts, to identify whether or not these arguments, old or new, are applicable. In this way, he provides a clear and strong argument in favor of homosexuality.
During the 1940’s and 1950’s, Alfred Kinsey, who started an in depth research on sexuality to make others aware of the natural occurrence of being homosexual, once said, “Males do not represent two discrete populations, heterosexual and homosexual. The world is not to be divided into sheep and goats. Not all things are black nor all things white.” Clearly, Kinsey was trying to point out that among the different species in the world, everything should not be judged in an offensive way. In other words, an individual should not be judged on the basis of what one sees.
In today’s political, religious, ethical and philosophical fields, homosexuality is still a highly debated and controversial topic. It almost seems like a daily occurrence that we are exposed to the debate of homosexuality in the media with issues related to it being decided on and discussed by the Supreme Court, religious officials and political leaders. Whatever the debate surrounding Homosexuality may be, it can be said that it has, and most likely will, capture the attention of society in some capacity for years to come. Of all the arguments against homosexuality, perhaps the most frequently contended is that Homosexuality or Homosexual sex is unnatural. However, this argument is essentially nothing more than empty rhetoric.
Students who attend top-notch universities have access to meal plans that fit in with their financial aid, while students that attend community colleges do not have the ability to have financial assistance when they purchase food from a cafeteria, which leaves many students hungry and struggling with their academic standing and overall well-being. According to Matt Reed, “Students who are distracted by hunger can’t focus as well as students who are fed.” (Confessions of a Community College Dean) This is in fact both an academic standing and an overall well-being issue for students. Which further brings the question of why isn’t there something in place for these students left in the shadows?
A man and a man cannot create life together and neither can a woman and a woman. It does not fit into their ideal world. The ideal traditional nuclear family is made of a man, a woman, and children. Functionalists worry that if homosexuality became a norm, then the continuation of our species would be threatened. This is an argument used in many cases that are against gay rights and gay marriage.
