There are many reasons why I think I should get into Honors Chemistry. Ever since I was young, I’ve had a fascination for Chemistry and the properties of elements. I have bought multiple books about the characteristics of numerous elements like how Palladium (Pd, My favorite element), element number 46 is the element before silver, can absorb hydrogen gas like a sponge because there is a gap big enough between each atom at an atomic level for a hydrogen atom, being able to absorb 900 times its volume in hydrogen. I have also learned that despite people saying Iridium (Ir, element 77) is the densest element (the density of Iridium is 22.56 g/cm^3, the calculations for it were incorrect and Osmium (Os, element 76) is actually more dense being …show more content…

My favorite part of chemistry and nuclear physics as a whole has always been the creation of man-made elements from Neptunium (Np, element 93) to Ununoctium (Uuo) (a placeholder for the actual name meaning 118, Uno-Uno-Oct). Despite the short half-life of these elements, they have always amazed me that we could create elements even supernovas couldn’t even form. I would also like to learn more about nuclear fission (and its role in nuclear bombs Uranium-135 and Plutonium-139 isotope bombs in nuclear bombardment) , moles (6.022*10^23 atoms of a specific substance and one mole of a substance equals its approximate atomic mass in grams), allotropes, quarks (up down, strange, and charm), neutrinos, leptons, positrons (in antimatter), electron orbitals (and how an electron is more like a cloud of probability in quantum mechanics, being more likely to be in one place than another), the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle for electrons, electron configurations, gamma, beta, and alpha radiation when I am in this class. I know I will have to work hard and stay determined to become a nuclear physicist that is well known or make large contributions to society when I am older.
