Horrors of the Concentration Camps From 1933 to 1945 the Nazis had been terrorizing the Jews during what is now called the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a horrible time in human history where Jews were being deported to concentration camps. Three major camps were Auschwitz, Belzec, and Bergen-Belsen. Each had their own way of using or killing the Jews. Auschwitz-Birkenau was established in 1940 in Poland. The original use of the camp was to intimidate the Poles so they wouldn’t fight back it also served as a prison for those who did resist. The Nazi 's used the Soviet POWs at the Auschwitz camp in trials of the poison gas to experiment its efficiency. It was produced by the German company which was marked as the best way to kill many people at once. The Nazis decided that all the Jews living in Europe for total extermination, regardless of their age, sex, occupation, citizenship, or political views. In Auschwitz Dr. Mengele was another one of the horrors of the camp. He was commonly referred to the Angel of Death; he chose whether you went to the camp or the gassing chambers. The camp was divided into three parts extermination, Administration section, and the barracks and storage area for plundered goods. They had their own way of killing the Jews. First they would have them work until they were to weak and feeble to walk. Then they would load 2,500 of them onto trucks and told them they were going to a transit camp. They were told that before being assigned to labor duties elsewhere they would be disinfected and showered. They marched them into the gas chambers they disguised as showers. The carbon monoxide gas was piped in from a diesel engine mounted outside. Once the gas chambers were filled and the doors shut, the killing process took up to 30 minutes.
