Intro:
Horse Racing is a sport that has been a glamorized sport by society for many centuries. It comes in various forms including Track racing, Derby racing, and Cart racing. However, behind the glamour is a world of drug abuse, injury, horrific breakdowns, and even slaughter, where horses are being forced to run for their lives (PETA, n.d.). These animals are being raced between the ages of two and five, which is a very young age to be running around a track multiple times a week. (Roots, C 2017). This essay will argue why horse racing should be an illegal sport and bring to light the issues behind the scenes of horse racing.

Drug use in horse racing is more common than people think. Many drugs are used to heighten a horse’s performance, but by far the most used and dangerous drugs in the horse racing industry today are the Class 4 NSAID’s drugs, which are non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (Allin, J 2018). When there’s so much at stake, trainers will go to any extent to try give their horse an advantage without even considering the horse’s welfare (Andrew, E. 2004). Drugs called Stimulants are used to give the horse a boost of temporary energy and unfortunately trainers use drugs not only to enhance performance but also to cover an underlying pain or injury the horse may have (Gustafson, 2008). Quite often, if a horse is injured before a race, the owner will allow illegal drug use to get the horse across the finish line. Drugs such as, Beta Blockers to slow the heart rate, Narcotic Analgesics for a powerful stimulant, and Etorphine as a tranquilizer are commonly used (Andrew, e. 2004).
