In 1999, 15,000 equestrian-related injuries to kids 15 and under needed emergency room visits. This statistic shows the many risks that brave equestrians take every day while riding. Horseback riding is the toughest sport because there are various risks that come along with riding, there are different difficult activities around riding, and you work harder than any other sport. Equestrianism includes many different aspects of it. It is an extremely tough sport. There is English riding which includes jumping, cross country, dressage, and a couple others. Western Riding includes roping, barrel racing, bronc riding and more. Many people think of riding as just riding on the horse. But, there are many tasks you need to do in order to keep your horse “rideable”. “Lifting weights? Easy, why need dumbbells when I lift 50-pound bags of feed, haul and dump big wheelbarrows of manure and carry water buckets? That's just doing chores.” (Ruis) This shows the work we need to do every single day around the barn in order to ride and keep our horses healthy. Other activities include longeing, which is an exercise you need to do to train your horse to do certain tricks or exercise your horse. Have you ever tried to halter a horse that did not want to be ridden? It’s hard work, you have to run after them and outsmart them which is hard to do. For a person who weighs 150 pounds, grooming a horse burns about 114 calories, longeing (yes, it is spelled like this) burns 79, tacking up burns 46, and warm-up riding burns 226. That means an equestrian burns 463 calories warming up. To put it in perspective, playing football for 30 minutes burns 438...” (whetter) Clearly, just warming up by riding and doing riding tasks burns more calories than playing 30 minutes of football. This shows that horseback riders work harder than someone playing football for 30 minutes, and yet, it’s just what equestrians burn when they’re warming up. On the other hand, some people think boxing is the toughest sport because it involves punching and violence. Meanwhile, boxing for thirty minutes only 270 calories for a 125-pound person. Thus, horseback riding is the toughest sport because we work harder than any other sport. To sum up, horseback riding or equestrianism is the toughest sport because there are different dangers that surround riding, there are troublesome activities you have to do around riding, and you work harder than other sports. A few people do say that you just simply sit on your horse and it does all the hard work for you. This is obviously not true, as horseback riding professionally or formally is a tough workout.
