Have you ever thought about becoming a horticulturalist, you may be the one to discover the next ground breaking discovery in agriculture. Horticulture hall located just northeast of central campus has been known to many influential and important people since it was founded at Iowa State University. Inside the main doors of the building you will find a piece of artwork done by Sarah Grant showcasing images of all the types of horticulture and the individuals who made significant contributions to this university and the world (as shown above). In 1891 he was the first African American to enroll at Iowa State University, he later graduate in 1894. With his expertise in botany and horticulture he enrolled in graduate school. After he completed his graduate school he was appointed to a faculty member at Iowa State University become the first African American teacher. He would go on to publish several articles and his work would gain national attention and respect. Carver later would leave for the Booker T. Washington research center where he would discover hundreds of products from peanuts, sweet potatoes and also discovering other plants. There is a direct quote from Dennis Keeney who was the Director of Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture talking about Caver. “Carver worked on improving soils, growing crops with low inputs, and using species that fixed nitrogen (hence, the work on the cow-pea and the peanut) (Fishbein). “Carver wrote in The Need of Scientific Agriculture in the South: The virgin fertility of our soils and the vast amount of unskilled labor have been more of a curse than a blessing to agriculture. This exhaustive system for cultivation, the destruction of forest, the rapid and almost constant decomposition of organic matter, have made our agricultural problem one requiring more brains than of the North, East or West" (Fishbein). Budd was one of the most decorated people in this drawing that people hardly knew. J.L. came to Iowa State to be a professor in Horticulture, where he became one of the most recognized teachers in the country. He completed numerous test on fruits with most of his finding being present in apples. He would be promoted to head of department after a few years at Iowa State where he would continue studying apples and even go to Russia to create apples. Many years would pass by and J.L. would become president of the University. J.L.’s work is shown at every level and all over campus but people are unaware of his
