Quality patient care begins with well trained and empathetic nursing assistants. The hospital nursing assistant must have good listening skills and be perceptive in order to understand what a patient may be communicating and should be able to respond appropriately. The hospital nursing assistant must have the ability to assess a patient and notify the nurse of significant changes.

NewBridge will provide didactic and experiential training in the role and responsibilities of the nursing assistant, including basic patient care skills as well as communication skills. Any student testing positive for TB must have a chest x-ray and provide the report to NewBridge and the clinical site. Sites may have additional requirements for confidentiality, insurance, health records, etc. Employment conditions will include negative screening for nicotine, alcohol and nonprescription drug use.

Course Length: 7-weeks 125 hours (Classroom and Lab Skills) 1-week 20 hours (Clinical Experience) Class Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 2:30 during didactic training

The Hospital Nursing Assistant Program (STNA) Is a 7-week didactic training program with 20 hours of clinical experience in an institutional setting.

Units of Instruction

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
This unit will stress the importance of communication in the healthcare field. When a nursing assistant, or anyone on the team performs an action, charting that action informs the others caring for the patient that the task has been accomplished, and the results of the action. This helps in monitoring the patients’ progress, and response to actions and procedures. Major topics covered are fire prevention and procedures to follow in case of a fire disaster and natural disaster preparedness. Alternatives to residents’ restraints and mobility and ambulation techniques are also covered.

Anatomy & Physiology/Medical Terminology/Disease & Disorders The focus of this unit will be on the functions of body systems appropriate to the nursing assistant scope of practice. The knowledge of how body systems work allows the student to identify abnormities that need to be reported. Students must be able to define common medical terms and abbreviations used in health care in order to communicate efficiently and provide the required treatments.

Promoting Independence and Residents Rights/HIPPA The importance of maintaining patient confidentiality and complying with HIPPA regulations is emphasized. Additional focus is placed on working well with patients/clients; being pleasant and polite to patients; projecting a caring, empathetic and professional attitude; and explaining the procedures and reducing patient
