An unremarkable New York Times article, which was considerably small and short, at approximately 300 words, grabbed viewers and drew the audience. The column reported the Clutter family murder in the tiny farm town of Holcomb, Kansas on the Great Plains. “Popular headlines surrounding the Clutter family murders were often along the lines of ‘Wealthy Farmer, 3 Of Family Slain” with a photo of Herb Clutter which left residents in shock and dismay that a horrific crime marred the serene and presumably safe landscapes
Tongues Untied (Riggs, 1989) is an award winning documentary by Marlon Riggs with the assistance of many other homosexual black men. The documentary put poems together to recreate an image of what it was like to grow up as a homosexual black man during the 80's. Men in the film spoke about the discrimination they had to face on everyday bases. They were called names like faggot, homo, and punk, but if they kept silent about being homosexual they felt like the silence was just as impairing. Some even reveal that they were treated as a threat or invisible.
At some point of your life you meet very special people that carry very similar interests. This creates bonds that can be a very powerful and important part of your life. Some may say that bonds are created between a series of negative events that leads up to friendship. However, this is not true because in The Way, the main characters come together to walk the same path. Each character motivates each other to achieve the overall reason of why they wanted to walk The Camino De Santiago.
In the 2013 film Short Term 12, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, a twenty-something woman, Grace, works at a place called Short Term 12, where she cares for troubled youth. Grace, who is portrayed by Brie Larson strives to make the children in the facility feel loved and cared for, despite the fact that they may never feel like that. Each child comes from a different type of family, and each has their own troubling story; however, when the children are at Short Term 12, their pasts do not define them. Grace treats each person in Short Term 12 as an equal. Throughout the film, a viewer sees Grace’s life when she works at Short Term 12, and the life she has outside of the facility.
Continuity editing is a film term that implies that a series of shots should be physically continuous. It has become known as the popular ‘classic Hollywood’ style of editing. This style is used to create a sense of normality within films and let the audience make sense of the visuals. Some of the key influential films in the early 1920’s used these effects like in The Great Train Robbery, which introduced cross cutting, an editing method that is used to show what occurs in two different places at the same time. Some other examples of continuity editing techniques are the 180 degree rule, establishing shot and shot reverse shot, these are used as a way of advancing narrative.
Rhythmic editing, usually dictated by music, describes an assembling of shots or sequences according to the rhythmic pattern. It can be a narrative, as in the movie Sherlock Jr, or a music video type collage, as in Sam Hunts Take Your Time. In both cases, music takes the center stage and dialogue is suppressed. In Sherlock Jr, there are many forms of editing which highlight the films magnificence.
The controversial question in many Americans’ minds is as follows, “So we are allowed to fight and die for our country, but we have to wait three years to legally drink a beer?” (Fulton). In schools alcohol is taught to be a bad, foreign, and a taboo subject; this is because many Americans abuse alcohol. They are not responsible or respectful when consuming liquor. The ladies succeeded mainly because of their intelligence, intuition, work ethic, and willingness to take every opportunity presented to them. While this film is intended to highlight the struggle of Black people (women especially) to overcome prejudice and unfair circumstances (hence the title Hidden Figures, which alludes to the fact that many great breakthroughs in knowledge etc is largely misattributed or lacking in proper credit given), the overarching message can be applied to anyone who is suffering from similar circumstances. The movie Signs shows how one person’s perspective on their own beliefs can change after a disastrous scenario that can either make or break a person and the people around them. Merrill, the younger brother of Graham, is living with the family because of Graham’s inability to care and protect his family. Merrill, throughout the movie, is seen as not the father figure but as an older brother. He is younger, stronger, and faster than Graham.

Individuality is unaccepted and isolated from our society that embraces conformed values. The Copy Shop and L’homme sans tete are examples of short films that reflect this ironic problem of society where individuals are not identified with their individual morals, but conformed morals enforced by society. The 2001 short film, Copy Shop by Virgil Widrich conveys the idea of conformity. This is done foremost through the metaphor of 'copies' that fill up the film's world that represent conformity, where the composer satirises our society which is filled up by 'copies' of individuals sharing conformed ideals.

In the film Extreme Measures someone can find ideas of Secular Ethics throughout the film involving Utilitarianism and its basic tenets along with Kantian analysis. The basic tenets of Utilitarianism include the principle of utility, Hedonism, and the viewpoint of a disinterested and benevolent spectator. While the tenets of Kantian Ethics, which include good will, the formula of universal law, the formula of the end itself, and the categorical imperative. These basic ideas setup arguments for and against the Utilitarian ideas set up by doctor Myrick. In the film doctor Myrick makes the claim that it is worth the deaths of unwilling subjects in order to help/save the lives of millions.
