In The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer. Our main character Matt at a young age, is raised by Celia, his caretaker, in an old shack. He is taught to be more caring, and grateful for what he has. We find out later that he is a direct clone of the cold, fearful, and powerful drug lord El Patron. Matt and Celia are then taken into the big house. With a whole new life that Matt is not used to, he is faced with having to deal with a dysfunctional family while also being El Patron’s clone. Due to Matt being a direct clone of him, he has inherited his horrible personality. Since Matt is a clone, he is discriminated against by others because of his differences, but since he’s El Patron’s direct clone, everyone must treat him the same way they’d treat the old man. Matt’s hatred toward Tom is apparent this whole chapter but Maria stands against it. Because of this, later in the chapter she throws his present. Matt, being very angry, forces her to pick it up and give him a kiss as well. With El Patron by his side, he makes hateful remarks such as “Make your women toe the line.”(108). In the end, Maria is forced to give Matt a kiss. But in the moment, he starts regretting his choices but mustn’t back out now since it is far too late(110). Later in the book, on chapter 12, page 112. Not only does Matt explain how remorseful he is of his actions, he vows that he must make it up to Maria. I believe I can use this to support my claim. Although Matt’s genetic personality came out during the huge scene. I believe that only happened due to the normalized hatred around him, but being treated as an equal to someone like El Patron, like a higher-up gave him an ego for a short while. Celia taught Matt to be kind and caring at a young age, he is more prone to being emotional and more caring during these situations, which is why he’d feel more sorry rather than a Matt if he was raised by El
