Houston Community College Speech Observation Report

The Houston Community College organized a speech tournament for students to partake in an opportunity of demonstrating both their speech and communication skills. The student’s skills are applied while each individual presents their speeches on the most popular topics, such as legalizing marijuana and Obamacare, in front of a vast audience filled with many faculty members. The audience is able to listen to the students’ input and conducted research they have completed while simultaneously exhibiting their communication skills successfully. The main purpose of hosting a speech tournament is for students to exemplify those acquired skills and to allow faculty to evaluate the presented content and review on further improvising.

Amy Tan, believes that the speech tournaments are great for students to be exposed to. Having the opportunity to gain such exposure allows students to showcase their taught skills. Additionally, they will be able to attain awards, where it will also be publicized. This opportunity will allow college students to build their resumes and utilize the experience for applying for not only scholarships but also for four-year institutions. Students are able to gain a higher college degree to achieve more job opportunities and benefits. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Stephan Levey, explains how the Houston Community College has recently transformed in academics, especially in the speech and communication portion. The prosperity of the speech and communication areas allows the college to host a speech tournament, and in hopes to continue to organize similar events in the near future for the students. As more students participate in these types of events, students are able to enhance their skills, gain further experience, and apply them to their future after graduation.
