This week’s discussion, “How America is Oversexed and under Educated” has brought up a sensitive topic that is typically viewed by the average American household as some type of taboo, hidden secret, sin, private or personal topic that is never openly discussed outside the confines of the household. The family usually allows this sensitive topic to be handled at the school level for sex education awareness or behind closed doors at the home by parents or a relative. However, today’s assertion that sex is everywhere in America is probably one of the biggest understatements that you could ever make about America’s culture. But, how it changed the beliefs, values, behavior and attitudes about male dominance figure point in society overall. The co-authors Mary Lamanna, Agnes Riedman and Susan Stewart in “FSW 261, Miami University” shows how early America patriarchal society mindset has changed due to the progression of sexual freedoms and liberties equalities for all genders and races in America. The Sexual Revolution movement in the 1960’s proved how expressive sexuality among the genders to express emotional feelings and not solely based on biological factors to reproduce and have offspring but to enjoy it and build their intimacy between two people. (p. 86-86) The movement from conservative style of choice of sexuality to freedom of choice among society has brought severe consequences with them as well for the individual, couples, and families overall. The epidemic of AIDS being passed on through sexual contact has been a major game changer for heterosexual and homosexual life styles framework with the sexual freedoms outside of the biological process to reproduce. My parents provided me the old traditional lecture about the birds and the trees. In which, how nature takes it role to produce offspring’s for different species and how humanity plays the same roles. The mention of morality, values and waiting until you get married would be the correct choice. Also, my sex education didn’t stop after high school and continued on during my tenure in the military with our mandatory annual POSH training that covers sex and our responsibilities as a soldier in the United States Army. If I had the choice to go back and change anything about what I learned about sex I would change the peer group philosophy about what I was led to believe about sex and relationship values between men and women. The men masculinity mentality stated by the co-authors how men are dominant in the relationship and how women are suppose to submissive to men in gender roles with the typical mindset between the genders in cultural development. (p. 73-74) This mindset stated by the authors was the typical influence among my peers when growing up. However, today I can see this was not the correct influence that peers could provide to their friends and could lead to future relationship issues between couples.
