White men had more power than white women, but blacks had no power at all. He says that Celia’s story was important in showing how blacks were lesser people, but not all situations were handled the same as hers. The book begins
If Blacks were allowed a factory job, they were mainly likely to be paid less than the regular white man. This is only one of the many of the ways, black man was segregated. African Americans were not paid normal wages. This hurt the African American families. This made it so that they couldn’t always provide food, shelter, clothes, and the other basic necessities for life.
The fact that the story is set in a racist society is a huge reason that many of the characters adhere to change and do not want to be inferior to the white people. The dark skinned fellows such as Mathu, Gable, Coot and Charlie all are influenced by their inferior status compared to the white men. The men did not like how the white people would always accuse them of their actions. The black people were treated like slaves sinee the white people could determine what would happen to the black people. Coot was always angered by the white people, who did not want Coot to wear his uniform, and Gable, whose son was guilty, was accused, just because it was a white woman.
Common forms of segregation of the black community were actions such as having them sit at the back of public buses and designating different drinking fountains as seen in my visual piece. Another quote stated within the court “A white man had been killed during a robbery, and though two of the robbers had been killed on the spot, one had been captured, and he, too, would have to die.” the use of adjectives in this shows the balance of power between the two races and implies that if they robber had been white he would have been convicted differently. The use of the image portraying slavery emphasizes the injustice and little power the black community struggled with. Other examples of this power imbalance is shown consistently throughout the book, for example the quote "I have no idea."
The history of the blacks is neglected in African-Americans classrooms, resulting in the development of an inferior feeling among the blacks. In chapter two of the book, Woodson states that education in American schools drifted from the truth when it started conditioning the blacks to admire the Greeks, British, and Romans. Consequently, the African-Americans developed a belief that they have a lower intellectual ability. The mindset is still present in the contemporary United States. For instance, business started by the black people are not well received in the locality they intend to serve.
During this time period, blacks had many different statuses. Some were slaves forever, some were like indentured servants. They were allowed to actually own property, get married and after they served their time they were freed. Slaves were at the bottom of the social order but the individuals above them were not much better. The white people that were poor did not have as many hardships because they always thought at least they were not slaves, even though they were towards the bottom of the social structure.
One of these flaws is equal rights. African Americans are having difficulties obtaining their own spot. “[Hansberry brings] local, individual struggles of African Americans—against segregation, ghettoization, and capitalist exploitation—to the national stage. (Gordon, 121 and 122)” The play first points out segregation.
The characters throughout the play shows that they felt they couldn't do something a white person could do just because they are black and get treated differently. But if something is unfair and you stand up for what you want, then you will get what you want. Race plays a big part in this play because if the Youngers weren't black, they most likely wouldn't have experienced the things they went through just because of the color of their skin. The story would be different because of something small like that. Following your dreams is important no matter what your race is because if it unfair or something that you want then you should stand up for it like what the Youngers did.
Many black collages began to spring up given blacks a chance to get a higher education as well as possess the skills that were needed to get an excellent job. However, education did not come easy for these black southerners. There was still a power struggle and educated blacks were more of a problem then uneducated one. W. E. B. Dubois captured the unjust inequity in his assembled for the 1900 Paris Exposition. DuBois photographed a group or black college students, both male and female, that are working hard demonstrating their blacksmithing skills.
Blacks were uneducated and some whites where in the same predicament. White believed just because of the color of their skin, they were elite and wealthy. Poor whites often denied education in this regard. Blacks were interested in receiving the undercover education whereas as whites didn’t want it. Blacks took pride in learning new information.
The white people viewed slaves as sub-human, and a black woman who was mentally superior was not something they would have encountered before. Dana explains what Margaret, Tom’s wife, may have been feeling; “I don’t think Margaret likes educated slaves any better than her husband does…. He can barely read and write. And she’s not much better” (Butler 82).
Her characters like Walter and Ruth are forced to live in a cramped house because they don’t have the money to move out. Walter has to work as a chauffeur driving people around all day for a low wage. Just like in that time period when African Americans could not get high paying jobs, this aided in the racial problem because it kept blacks from being able to move into white neighborhoods. Another method used to keep blacks out of White neighborhoods was contract buying. “When selling on contract, the speculator offered the home to a black purchaser for a relatively low downpayment- often several hundred dollars would suffice.
The educational system in America contains numerous racial disparities that affects the very core of the children who is suppose to benefit from education. This disparity comes in many forms in primary schools, a teacher’s attitude being one of them (Epps, 1995). A teacher’s attitude in a classroom consisting of a racially diverse children is a large contributing factor to the academic success of their students, more specifically, the minority African American students. It is a given that all schools should employ qualified teacher who are passionate about their students and the quality of education they provide to these students. Unfortunately, that is not the case for many urban schools that house a large proportion of African American students
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
(Lee 269). This shows conflict between classes because white people are giving black people a hard time. Black people were perceived as the lowest class and throughout the story people would treat them as if they were dirt. Being in the lowest class, they would have to do all of the terrible work. They never had a chance to get a good job and be successful because of the white people.
