How Can A Microscopes That May Be Used To Classify Bacteria

1100 Words5 Pages

Bacteria do not need a host cell to reproduce unlike viruses. A virus is able to reproduce and multiply when it can survive in a living host cell. Bacteria and Viruses are both organisms with a single cell. There are different shapes to describe bacteria and these shapes can help a scientists to classify them. Their arrangements are usually what’s considered when classifying. In relation to size, a virus is predominantly smaller than bacteria but there have been new discoveries for the size of a virus. Since bacteria and viruses are very small you are limited to the microscopes that can aid you in seeing it a lot clearer. The specific microscope that can be used is key to being able to see the arrangement of cells. There are many diseases and illnesses that are caused by the small percentage of bad bacteria and viral infections. These infections that can affect your body can be spread by various channels.

Bacteria and viruses are small and they cannot be seen without a magnification device. In order to see bacteria or a virus scientist use microscopes. There is a range of microscopes that can be used …show more content…

The main shapes of bacteria include cocci, bacilli, and spirilla. Cocci or coccus is a circular cell, bacilli or bacillus is in the shape of a rod, and spirilla or spirillum is curved which would be similar to a spiral like shape. In order for you to be able to see this a scanning electron microscope would be best for any results. An average coccus is about .5-1.0 micrometer in diameter (Kaiser, 2017). A bacillus and spirillum is about 1.0 micrometer wide. Cocci can be placed in groups based on their configuration. Diplococci, streptococci, and staphylococci are part of the different cocci and they are each organized differently. Streptobacillus and coccobacillus are bacillus bacteria and they also have their own arrangement. Spirochete is included in the subcategory of
