How appearances can be deceptive is demonstrated in the novel Frankenstein. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, Victor created a creature in the experiment of life and death. He created a being that was capable of taking life away from this earth. This creature is very misunderstood and this led to unfortunate events. In this novel, the theme of appearances being deceptive is tied into the two devices: person vs. person and dramatic irony. He is the one who created the creature, so the least he can do is not be selfish and give him the necessity to live a happy life. This is how these quotations in the novel tie into the theme of appearances being deceptive and the literary device of person vs person. The second literary device demonstrated in this novel, Frankenstein, is dramatic irony. This device plays a major role in this novel and it leaves us the readers knowing more than the characters, it also makes the theme of appearances can be very clear while reading. The quotation “I took refuge in the courtyard belonging to the house which I inhabited, where I remained for the rest of the night. Walking up and down the greatest agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing each sound as if it were to announce the approach of the democratic corpse to which I had so miserably given life” (Chapter 5) demonstrates how Victor ran as soon as the creature he had created came to life, Victor freaked out the first time he laid eyes on the being he gave life to. The theme of appearances being deceptive is very prominent, Victor reacted on his first thoughts and looks at this being. He didn't spend time with it and tried to get a better understanding of the needs and wants of the creature. He hid and was terrified, but if he had just been patient and tried to understand this being more, he would have realized that the creature had no bad intentions. A second example of the device of dramatic irony and the theme appearances can be deceptive is; “1,000 times rather I have confessed myself guilty of the crime scribe to Justine’s; But I was absent when it was committed and such a declaration would have been considered as the ravings of a madman and would not have exculpated her who suffered through me” (Chapter 8). As Victor said this, a few things became very clear to the readers, as we talked about the device in this quotation it became very clear. Victor was the only one who knew about the creature, but as Justine was getting blamed for the murder of William, Victor knew the entire time the truth and who did it. It was the Creature. Victor couldn't confess to it because he was the only one who knew of this being and he couldn't tell them
