Cheerleading is a Sport by Definition
The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. The first part says an activity which cheerleading is because people take time out of their days to come to practice and make themselves better athletes. Cheer takes up a lot of someone's life because school cheerleading is everyday after school for two of more hours for the football and the basketball season, and then also they have games every week that takes up all of their Fridays. It’s not easy to put someone in the air and then tumble right after and make it look effortless. And it's not easy to get tumbling skills either. cheerleaders have to execute one skill before they try to do the next because they all stack up on top of one another. It takes a lot of trust in themselves to be able to flip themselves in ways they've never done before and to be mentally strong enough to try something new that could end up in an injury if they do one thing wrong. Then once an athlete gets a skill they must get it cleaned up and perfect, so they can execute it correctly in their routine. Part of a competitions score sheet is called tumbling technique which scores how the athlete executes a skill and perfect the skill looked. They also must get in consistent so that when they do it in the routine they won't fall and cause a deduction. A deduction is when a stunt falls or when an athlete fails to land their tumbling. deduction s take off a teams final score and can cause them to lose a competition. Another skill athletes must learn is how to stunt. Stunting can be difficult because the athletes must learn how their teammates stunt and they have to get used to each other. This one is obvious because competitive cheerleadings sole purpose is to compete and win. A team makes their routine have a lot of difficulty in order to be a “top dog” at their competitions. They want to go to competitions and take home the gold and be crowned national champions so they know that their hard work has paid off. No one wants to go to a competition to lose because then it will make it seem like they are out of their element and that they shouldn't be there with all the teams that are better than them. But if a team does lose then it makes them push harder at practice so that they can win the next one. Teams are also competing aggressively to win bid to go to the Summit or to Worlds. Summit and Worlds are the ending events so cheerleading and it requires a bid in order to compete there. “This means your chances of winning a Summit Bid this season are 15.68%!”(Chaos, Cheer). The odds for getting a worlds bid is one in four since Worlds is only for level five teams which increases your chances. These competitions are so big that there are full paid bids for both competitions that gives teams $25,000 to go to the competitions(Cornette). The money helps pay for travel, hotel, and admission. They are both held in Orlando, Florida but at different times. Winning a competition doesn't automatically earn them a bid. They must be the top ten teams with the highest
