What is a social issue? A social issue is a subject that affects many people and communities. How could shoplifting be considered a social issue, you might ask? The definition of shoplifting is taking goods from a store without paying for them; this could be considered a social issue of the effect shoplifting has on communities. That's why we need to stop shoplifting by either adding more security or getting thieves the help they need to not do it again. The sides of the table for shoplifting are, Law enforcement, Corporations/businesses, victims, lawyers/judges, and the ethics of shoplifting from psychologists. A Walmart employee said, “It’s really uncomfortable, and it becomes, like, a safety issue,” This statement happened after Walmart tried to start cracking down on shoplifting by arming employees with handheld devices that track purchases. Many stores around the nation have had to close due to theft, and for employee safety, this all comes after Walmart lost approximately $3 billion due to shoplifting. And they are not the only ones to lose money due to shoplifting; a bunch of other big-time corporations also lose money due to shoplifting. With how much money corporations lose, they are strongly against shoplifting. And with the danger that victims are put in, making most of them never able to feel safe again, they are also strongly against shoplifting. Now it's time to move on to the seats of the table, at least have an understanding of why people might shoplift. What is most commonly found in shoplifters is “While it has been found depression is often present in about a third of all shoplifters, another mental disorder that may be at play is kleptomania. It was believed that actual cases of kleptomania were quite rare, but it has been found it is becoming more common”. Kleptomania is a type of impulse disorder that makes it hard for shoplifters to be impulsive. And then on the other hand people sometimes have no choice but to steal ”While not every act of shoplifting can be linked to a psychological factor”. This happens when people are put in a bad situation where they were born in a bad environment and they end up homeless or they have a mental problem that makes it so they have to steal. Therefore sometimes they can not help but steal because that is what they need to survive. Just imagine what you would have to do if you needed to survive. What would you think if somebody you know got caught shoplifting, would you want to see them thrown in prison and get out and shoplift again, or would you rather get them the help they need to not do it
