On December 10, 1832, President Andrew Jackson issued the proclamation of the nullity, which stated that States and municipalities have banned void federal laws. It also threatened to enforce the proclamation with the use of federal weapons. Although the commitment of Congress soon defused the situation, proclamation of Jackson made it clear that the federal Government was the supreme power in the United States and its willingness to use the army to ensure its supremacy. To begin with, President Jackson knew that before he could input any of his desired policies he had to have a fresh new start in his government. He sincerely felt that Congress wasn’t representing the American people he was always concerned about. At the start of his presidency, he got rid of senior federal officeholders that had previously served under several presidents. He replaced these officials with his own Democratic supporters. This way of selecting people for government jobs came to be called the “spoils system”.
Andrew Jackson was a controversial figure because he did so many negative things to so much innocent people. He was one of the first imperial presidents and one who was not a Virginia planter or a New England Federalist. Jackson was determined to change the United States; one of his first acts was the Indian Removal Act in May of 1830, which removed five tribes from ancestral homelands (Cave). This act led to thousands of Indian deaths more known as the Trail of Tears. Jackson was also a slave owner; he owned over 100 slaves and believed slaves were put on this earth to labor while whites were there to govern.

Andrew Jackson was so controversial because he would do things for the country like getting more land available to the settlers but in order to do all of that he needed to commit mass genocide of the Native Americans and lie to other government officials to get his way. He never listens to anyone in his cabinets or any of his secretaries, and instead seeks the advice from local friends. Jackson brought nothing but death,stress, and corruption to America. However, he abused this position of power and made several choices that were detrimental to the welfare and rights of the American people. Andrew Jackson made sure that the rich did not get any special privileges and had done many things, that he believed, would create peace and equality among the people. One of the biggest thing that Jackson had done as a president was in 1832. Jackson vetoed a bill that would renew the second bank charter early. Jackson stated “I will kill it!”. He said this because he didn’t like the bank at all and he believed that it made the rich richer and the poor poorer. He said in his veto message “It is easy to conceive that great evils to our country and its institutions might flow from such a concentration of power in the hands of a few men irresponsible to the people.”

First, one of the things that Andrew Jackson’s critics believed was negative was the removal of the United States national bank.
Andrew Jackson has been remembered as a ground breaking president, even being put on the $20. President Jackson was a controversial figure, doing many popular and unpopular things in his time. Although he is remembered as a hero from the war of 1812, he also caused the Trail of Tears and tried to destroy the National Bank. As a result, Jackson should not be put on the $20 bill. His actions have caused many misfortune showing that villains do exist.
Andrew Jackson was seen as a common man the voice of the people by some. By others he was King Andrew, trampling the constitution and instigating tyranny. Jackson’s presidency impacted democracy, through his use of the veto power, and his claim of Clay creating a “corrupt bargain”, which is not a turning point for a rise in democracy despite him giving white male suffrage. During Jackson’s use of executive power weakened voice of the people.
Andrew Jackson was a tough man. He even went by the name of ‘Old Hickory’. Andrew Jackson was a terrible president, but also a good president.
