World War I, also known as the Great War, was a worldwide war which primarily took place in Europe from 1914 to 1918. On June 28, 1914 was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the reason for the immediate start of the war. The revenge by Austria-Hungary against the empire of Serbia motivated a series of alliances which caused a slippery slope of reactions for war declarations.
World War I was fought by two major alliances. The Triple Entente originally was made of France, England, Russia, and their associated empires. The United States soon joined in April 1917. The Triple Alliance also known as the Central Powers, named because of their central location on the European continent, in the beginning consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy and their associated empires. Even though Italy was considered to be part of the triple alliance, they didn’t join the central powers, to which Austria-Hungary took offence to because Italy did not follow the rules of being an alliance. This war used chemical weapons for the first time ever, which is how World War 1 made history. The chemical weapons included but is not limited to, consisted of: phosgene, tear gas, chlorarsines and mustard gas. They also used grenades, flame throwers, for the land war. For the sea war they used submarines, torpedoes, mines, and mine sweepers.
November 11 is a very important date to certain people but to others in today’s society that is just an ordinary day to them. To the soldiers who survived in the trenches during the Great War; that very day they celebrated knowing that they were a survivor of the Great War. November 11 was also a day of sadness, uncertainty for many others because there was over 38 million casualties all
