The multi-year war between the Japanese and the United States is often overlooked, but it unfortunately is one of the most heartbreaking and destructive wars in history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan because of their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. For the next three years millions of people were killed, injured, and raped because of the unsolved comotion between the two nations. A key factor in the war was whoever could be the most successful in the air, whether that be firebombing, atomic bombing, or the infamous Japanese Kamikaze. The war was pestilent, disturbing, and was annihilatory towards both nations in many aspects.
The main reason the war was so devastating was the manner in which people …show more content…

Atomic bombs have only been used twice in war and they both were by the United States in 1945. Atomic bombs, unlike firebombing, cause huge explosions and leave behind extremely harmful radiation. On August 6, 1945 the United States dropped their first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, instantly killing over 100,000 people. Miles and miles of land were obliterated and people from over thirty miles away felt the explosion. Nearly all of Hiroshimas infrastructure was gone and there was nowhere to go for anyone who managed to stay alive. Similar to the firebombing, the atomic bombs caused large fires that spread rapidly and burned for days following the bombing. The second atomic bomb was dropped on August 9, 1945 in Nagasaki, Japan. The United States had the intention of hitting an arsenal located in the city, but after seeing the arsenal from the sky decided to just bomb the city because the arsenal was surrounded by a cloud of smoke. The effects on Nagasaki were just as horrific as those in Hiroshima and Tokyo, leaving the people of Nagasaki completely devastated. Overall, the damaged caused by the United States systematic firebombing and atomic bombing attacks was substantial and they all led to Japanese desperation for the war to come to an end. Shortly after the second atomic bomb was dropped, Japan surrendered and the war was …show more content…

They themselves caused much destruction for the United States and other allies. In 1944, the Japanese assembled special teams called Kamikazes to sacrifice themselves so that the Japanese could destroy U.S. ships, planes, submarines, carriers, fleets, and people. The Kamikazes would fly their planes into anything they could that would put a dent in United States hopes of invading and conquering Japan. Thousands of these Kamikaze raids occurred and greatly impacted United States resources. The United States could do very little to defend themselves against these suicide planes because the planes mission was simple: the hit and damage whatever it could. The Japanese damaged hundreds and hundreds of ships and other transportation devices and also killed an exorbitant amount of Americans. The United States believed that by using atomic bombs they would be able to finally put an end to the war and could potentially avoid killing more people if the war prolonged. Ultimately, the United States use of the atomic bombs created a situation where Japan had no choice to surrender, which was exactly what they were suppose to do. The United States balanced their choices and the outcomes and made the best choice not only for themselves but for the entire
