Baseball has certainly changed a great deal since 1900 to the present day. The National League started in 1876. In 1901 the American League was started. Soon afterwards the World Series was created. The two leagues came together to compete in the World Series to determine which team was the world champion. The World Series has been played since 1903. It was skipped one year because it was not compulsory to accept the invitation to play against the other league. Following the 1904 season, it was made mandatory for both league champions to face off after their league's playoffs. They still do it in the same way in the present time. After thirty seven years, the 1940’s was the decade known for the biggest change in baseball, which was mainly because of the politics that happened in the early part of this decade. The 1940’s were very rich in political and historical events. World War II began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and continued into the 1940’s. The Nazi’s were making Europe worse and Hitler was overrunning the countries surrounding Germany. Immediately after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1942 the United States joined the fight known as World War II. Baseball needed to look everywhere to find talented ballplayers that were not old enough to fight in the war or were not able to go to war. The search for ballplayers helped bring about the integration of blacks into baseball. Integration was the biggest thing that happened in sports in the 1940’s. “ Key event was the signing by Branch Rickey of Jackie Robinson of the Kansas City Monarchs, a move that integrated baseball” (1940’s).
