"Speak little, do much," (Poor Richard's Almanac). This is a quote by Benjamin Franklin. Franklin used this quote as a motto for himself and did just as the quote says. He did not talk that much, but he did a lot. He had several inventions that are still used today and without them, life would not be the same. He wrote many books and most important, he helped write the Declaration of Independence. He helped build several places that we have today that most importantly include police forces, hospitals, museums, libraries, and the University of Pennsylvania. In the nineteenth century, Franklin started many charitable organizations. Some of the organizations that he has started was the YMCA, the American Red Cross, and the United Way. The YMCA stands for the Young Men's Christian Association. The YMCA is a welfare movement that began in London in 1844 and now has branches that are all over the world. The American Red Cross is also known as the American National Red Cross. It is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and education in the United States. The United Way is a nonprofit organization that works with almost one thousand and two hundred United Way offices throughout the country in a coalition of charitable organizations to pool efforts in fundraising and support. He helped his community in a huge way. From all of his inventions including bifocals, lightning rods, the stove, flippers, chairs, second hands, a flexible catheter, and a long arm, all the way to his part in starting many organizations including the YMCA, the American Red Cross, and the United Way. Along with his willing personality and beliefs, he also helped build places such as police forces, a fire company, fire insurance, a public library, museums, and the University of Pennsylvania. He also wrote many books and helped write the Declaration of Independence. Overall, Benjamin Franklin helped not only his community back then, but he has had a major influence on our society today.
