The unifications in Italy were similar to those in Germany because they shared similar traits, such as common culture and language, and they shared some similar obstacles. Each country had a select number of major leaders that contributed to their unification, which by definition means the process of being united or made into a whole. But the two countries were different because of how they started and ended in unification.
Germany had its own factors to the steps of its unification aside from the similarities shared with Italy. Germany possessed a leader that contributed majorly to its unification, and he went by the name of Otto Von Bismarck. Italy possessed very few natural resources, as well as having no coal or iron. Helping resolve issues looming in the depths of Italy, a handful of leaders played a major role in the unification of Italy. These include Giuseppe Mazzini, Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Count Cavour. Giuseppe Mazzini was a very spiritually inspirational leader for Italian unification. He only wore the color black since the age of 15, and was known as the “Soul of Italy.” He gave people the impression that unification and liberation was not impossible. He had previously attempted many times at Italian unification, but none of those attempts had succeeded. When he was exiled from Genoa for his membership in a secret and violent organization, Mazzini founded the Young Italy movement. This movement contained members all under the age of 40. Mazzini himself had been a very impractical businessman, but his influence spread all throughout Europe, and he inspired his followers through his impassioned writings. Garibaldi was an Italian military leader of the “red shirts.” The Red Shirts were a group of Garibaldi’s followers of which he had started during his years of exile. He and his followers used red shirts that were originally designed for slaughterhouse workers. He conquered Sicily and Naples to give to King Victor Emmanuel II. Italy also had a handful of other leaders, but only a few that majorly contributed to the unification of Italy. Count Cavour was another man who had a large influence on the unification of Italy. He was also appointed prime minister by King Victor Emmanuel. In 1858, a secret meeting with Napoleon III was held to plan strategy for war for liberation. He also concentrated his efforts on freeing Italy from the Austrian Empire, and organized the system of New Italy after
