Charlemagne, King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, and Emperor of Rome, did not achieve these positions just with luck. He worked hard to dominate his kingdom and gain respect from the people. How did Charlemagne become such a powerful figure during the 7th and 8th century? Many contributing factors played a role to his success including the work that his father and grandfather did in order to unite the kingdom and pass it down to Charlemagne, working with the Catholic Church, and conquering land through quite a few wars and campaigns. There are also certain characteristics Charlemagne had that people remember him by. The author, Einhard, talks about how Charlemagne was a legitimate ruler. Charlemagne agreed to help him, and this lead to the war against the Lombards (Becher 54). Charlemagne did not give up. It was such a struggle to travel over the Alps to get to Italy. They climbed those high mountains until they finally got there and nothing could stop Charlemagne (Einhard). He worked so hard to seize Rome and stop Desiderius, the Lombard King. He forced him to surrender. Charlemagne also was able to get Desiderius’s son Adalgis, out of Italy. This was a major defeat for the Lombards (Einhard). Charlemagne had his son Pippin control Italy after their defeat. This was not Pippin the Hunchback, but his 5th child who was from his third wife, Hildegard (Becher …show more content…

This was a very important honor to him. Charlemagne was a very successful ruler. In 814, he passed away. It was a very devastating time for Charlemagne’s people. So many people mourned over his death and it was a hard time to recover from it. He really made an impact on these people. He was laid to rest in Aachen (Becher). Charlemagne’s son Louis the Pious succeeded him. He was the son of Charlemagne’s third wife, Hildegard. His other elder sons had already died. Charlemagne lived a really long time for this century. Reigning for forty-four years is an extremely long time. Most people did not even live forty-four years! Due to his lengthy time as a ruler, he was able to complete so many tasks and truly be a legitimate ruler.
