On May 21st, 1880, Clara Barton and a close group of friends founded the American Red Cross. However, Barton first heard of the Red Cross overseas in Europe. It was the Civil War times, and coming back to the United States, Barton advocated for the Red Cross in the US government. She then held leadership for 23 years. Therefore, she was one of the first women in American history to do so. It was also noted that she "campaigned for ratification of the convention," "led the first domestic and overseas disaster relief," and lastly, "aided the United States military during the Spanish-American war.
