How Did Commedia Dell Arte Influence American Theatre

Theatre has been used to centuries around the world. A specific kind, Commedia Dell'Arte, has helped to shape and lead a pathway into the future with European theatre. During the 16th to 18th century in Italy, Commedia Dell'Arte (in English is called the 'Comedy of the Profession', or 'Comedy of the Art') started to become visible and very popular. This form of theatre was unwritten, but instead a spur-of-the-moment, practice of drama. In relation, this may be known as improv in America. These performances were more focused on the manner of the performance, rather than the subject of the play. All the subjects, relationships between characters were picked out before the show started. The scenes more than half of the time, was performed within open air and their plots were basic often farmilar stories. Each time an actor/actress went to perform, they consistently needed to base their dialogue on what will best suit the audience. The ‘basic’ plot would be considered a storyline on young lovers, innamorati, attempting to get together. But a numerous number of elders, vecchi, or jealous guardian(s)/older spouses get into the way of their happy love story. Therefore, the innamorati seeks assistance from the zanni, aka the servant/trickster of the story. The zanni works his/her/it’s cunningness’s to outsmart the elders and the people getting in the way of the innamorati’s happiness. After a few times, the zanni brings the story to a blissful finale. Within the story, Commedia Dell’Arte also has a character named lazzi, which brought comic refelif to the scenes. They were often considered the most important part of the plays. Because there were so important, these high-profile roles, were only given to the most skilled
