Much Ado About Nothing
No one likes an eavesdropper especially when talking about relationships. There are many instances of eavesdropping in Much Ado About Nothing written by Shakespeare. It is a fact that Benedick, Don Pedro, Claudio, Leonato, Dogberry, and Hero all eavesdrop at one point. All of these characters are major and all help drive the plot of the play. They all play important roles to help keep the play interesting. Benedick was a man who at first doesn’t see the point of love, but eventually falls into the trap but on the other hand, Don Pedro was a prince that helped set his friends up with their love life. The father of Hero, Leonato, helped make Claudio get back with her and there was also Dogberry who was a man that often used the wrong words but eventually helped prove Hero didn’t cheat on Claudio due to his record keeping. The times when characters eavesdrop help set the stage for the play and honesty, make it more interesting and during these times of eavesdropping leads to conflicts later on. Due to all of the instances of eavesdropping, the play should be called Much Ado About Eavesdropping.
Eavesdropping is one of, if not, the most important points of the play. The first time eavesdropping is introduced was when Don Pedro, Leonato, and Claudio trick Benedick. They knew that Benedick was hiding in the garden and staged a conversation with each other. They begin to speak with one another and Leonato claims that Beatrice “loves [… Benedick] with an enraged affection”(Shakespeare 2.3). Now as readers of the play, it’s possible to infer that Don Pedro, Leonato, and Claudio are all aware that Benedick is hiding in the garden and Benedick is “[… thinks that it was] a gull but […the] white bearded fellow speaks it” so he believes that it must be true (2.3).
