Born on June 7, 1924 in New Jersey, Everett Barker began his World War Two (WW2) journey at 17 and a half years old. In high school, before the war broke out Barker was your average kid, he went to school and he also loved watching the ships go out to sea during lunch. Once the war began in Europe, Barker, as well as all of his friends wanted to enter the war, they would've been mad if they had been kept out of it. When Pearl Harbor happened, Everett finally was able to enter the war like he wanted. So he began working in the New Jersey Aviation company building planes for use in WW2. What he really wanted to do was be a Merchant Marine in the naval reserve, but sadly, a parent signature was required for that and his parents considered it to be a suicide mission. At the end of all of this he was required to take five days of exams in order to see if he was proficient. Everett passed all these tests with ease. On December 8th, 1944 he became a captain and was able to sail on any ship in the ocean. From there he was assigned to the Liberty Ship, Harry S., Everett was assigned this ship at the very young age of twenty years old. Liberty ships were boats that were constructed solely for the purpose of WW2 and were not intended to survive any longer than that. These ships were never out for more than four months at a time. He was a part of a slow moving convoy that delivered supplies for the war from country to country. Everett hated the slow aspect of this convoy because he knew that they could go faster. At one point Everett and his friends were sitting in the boat when they heard a V-2 bomb approaching, until it went out right above them. Luckily for them it only exploded the front half of their ship leaving them alive. On September 2, 1945 WW2 was over and Everett began the journey
