Trying to cage an animal you know that is going to escape is in its purest form insanity.
If in this metaphor if you see the ‘animal’ as alcohol in the 1920’s then you can understand the chaos behind the problem. In the classic American Tale The Great Gatsby , written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there is a huge undertone surrounding the problem of prohibition of alcohol in the 1920’s. Many characters throughout the book are deeply connected to the illegal alcohol bootlegging buisness and causes a huge dilemma in the book. Just as there is problems with trafficking alcohol in the book, the real world outside if Fitzgerald’s world was just as worse. The most dreaded crime boss that left his mark on American history was Al Capone. Capone was raised to be a bad seed; being inducted into a gang at the age of seven years old. As Al Capone rose to the man we all know him as today. Laura Beshears in her article “ Honorable style in Dishonorable Times” states that “Al Capone, who became one of the most notorious crime lords of the 1920s and 1930s, epitomized the Prohibition-era gangster figure. Typically dressed in pinstripe suits, fedoras, and fancy neckties, he served as a model of underworld fashion”. ( Pg. 2 ). At the age of 33 Capone's reign came to an end on the charge of many cases of tax fraud. This time in American history shows many parallels to struggles happening today in the U.S economy. The Mexican Drug cartel gained massive ground during December 11th 2006. This would start the Mexican drug war which affected both Mexico and the United States heavily. Though marijuana is not the only product being distributed in the Cartel, it is a gives the Cartel a profit of over 35%. A figure head similar to Al Capone for the drug trafficking industry is El Chapo. Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán the former president of El Salvador, began to lead the drug Cartel in the 1990’s. He would soon become the cause of personally 2000 or 3000 deaths by his own order alone. El Chapos career was finally ended recently when he was recaptured January 8, 2016.
