The status of one 's social class can shape them as they grow. Growing up being used to being pampered everyday of your life would have created a different person than if you had been born into a poor family like Jay Gatsby had. Jay Gatsby came from a poor family and was quite unhappy which ultimately lead him to leave his home behind and run away to pursue a brighter future.
Oftentimes, those who cling to the past find themselves in a world of delusion, thinking they can recreate what once was if they try hard enough. These individuals are startled when others around them seem changed, having moved on to face reality. They eagerly try to impress those around them with newfound luxuries to prove their worth. In the novel "The Great Gatsby," F. Scott Fitzgerald uses poignant diction to create deep symbolism, highlighting how people are often blinded by their optimism in restoring the past, this creates the misbelief that they are right to recreate the past which conflicts with reality and leads to denial, this denial causes their own potential to be wasted. Throughout the novel, Gatsby is constantly longing for a past relationship he had with a woman named Daisy, who moved on from Gatsby and married another man when Gatsby left for the war. In Chapter VI, Fitzgerald takes the reader back to 1917 in Louisville, KY when Gatsby and Nick Carraway the narrator talked about Daisy finally attending one of the parties he threw in hopes of drawing her to him. Four years prior, Gatsby left Daisy to go into the Army and Daisy moved on and got married, creating a new life for herself.
