Frederick Douglass was an important figure during his time. He worked hard and influenced so many events and so many people. He was an enslaved man who escaped after being enslaved for 20 years and then moved on to write about his experiences and help others. Frederick Douglass’ experiences and contributions to the abolitionist movement positively impacted the movement due to his speeches, autobiographies, and his push for equal rights among all races. Despite his troubles as an enslaved man, he prevailed and pushed others to speak out as well. Another way Douglass advocated for civil rights and inspired others was through his autobiographies. The White House Historical Association states that he published an autobiography titled “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave.” This autobiography was his first and allowed others to see what he went through and what troubles he faced. The autobiography was detailed and had exact names and places from the time he was enslaved in order to make sure those who doubted him knew his stories were real. Also according to The White House Historical Association, Douglass became one of the greatest leaders in the abolitionist movement due to his autobiographies and all the other things he did. He was able to conquer his struggles and everything he went through while being enslaved and also while he wasn’t enslaved, motivating others to do the same.
