During the late 12th and early 13th centuries, there was a small group of illiterate nomads living in present-day Mongolia. Fifty years later, this group transformed into the most unstoppable, ferocious, and relentless Empire to ever exist: The Mongolian Empire. From 1206 to 1368, they were able to take control of the majority of modern-day Europe and Asia through their aggressive and brutal ways. But how did they go from being a small, and uneducated group of people, to a force that has never been seen before? It was because they had one of the greatest leaders of all time, Genghis Khan. The Mongolian Empire under Genghis Khan was one of the greatest Empires ever and at one point was the biggest Empire of all time. According to “The Brutal Brilliance of Genghis Khan” by Frank McLynn, the Mongolian Empire reached modern Austria, Finland, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Vietnam, Burma, Japan, and Indonesia, covering 12 million square miles of Mongolian territory. Although they had only conquered the land mass extending from Beijing to the Caspian Sea before his death, Genghis Khan was still able to conquer a lot of land and build up the Mongolian Empire. This proves that Genghis Khan was one of the greatest emperors ever. At that time, every group and Empire was hungry to expand, conquer and take control of new territory. This was the only goal for many groups, and they were willing to do whatever it took to expand. However, many people and many groups rose and fell, but Genghis Khan was able to get the job done, and expand Mongolian territory. This was something that people failed at repeatedly, but Genghis Khan not only expanded the Mongolian territory exponentially but also made it the biggest Empire of all time. Genghis Khan wasn’t like many other leaders and didn’t fear many of the big emperors at the time. For example, according to Spencer Mizen, author of Genghis Khan: the Mongol Warlord Who Almost Conquered the World, the Jin Empire sent a message to Genghis Khan saying, “Our Empire is as vast as the sea. Yours is but a handful of sand. How can we fear you” The Jin had unimaginable wealth, gunpowder, and an enormous army equipped with state-of-the-art technology like catapults, and therefore had no reason to fear the Mongols. However, they were wrong to underestimate them and Genghis Khan ended up conquering the Jin Dynasty. A lot of people wouldn’t have even attempted to take on an army as big as the Jin dynasty because of the fear of the amount of destruction they would face. However Genghis Khan did not think like this, instead, he saw that the Jin were vulnerable, and decided to invade them. It is safe to say that if Genghis had been intimidated by the Jin like many were, the Mongolian Empire would never have conquered them, and their missions to conquer the world would have been stopped. However, because he didn’t fear anyone, he was able to conquer so much of Asia, which led to the Mongolian Empire's exponential growth.
