In February 1789, George Washington was elected to govern the United States. Washington felt it was important to watch his every move and judge every stride very carefully. There was definitely method in his madness though. Along with internal problems (like the Native Americans) beginning to arise, trouble was toiling across the Atlantic as well. In France, the need for a revolution and a change in powers was bending the country out of shape.
George Washington the leader of the Continental Army guided his troops across the Delaware River ready for battle. Johann Rall and his soldiers (Hessians) were still fighting against George’s military on December 26th, 1776. Moreover, in the article it confirms that after a brief battle, nearly the entire Hessian force was captured, with small losses to the Americans (wikipedia). The Hessian soldiers late that night were out getting wasted causing them to lose the battle. Washington expressed his doubts, writing to his cousin in Virginia, “I think the game is pretty near up.”
On June 15, 1775, Washington was appointed Major General and Commander-in-Chief of colonial forces. Washington was the colonies’ best choice because he had experience, had been advising the congress, and the biggest factor that went into it was that if he had not been given the job Virginia, a key colony in the resistance, would have backed out. Washington’s troops were not very successful and they lost many battles, but they were victorious in March of 1776 when they forced the British to withdraw from Boston. He then moved his troops to New York City where they fought in the largest battle of the revolution. The british army launched an attack that killed 2,800 men.
George Washington changed American History by commanding the Continental Army during the War for Independence. First off, Washington used the strategy of attrition to wear the British out during the war. Secondly, Washington helped to raise morale by winning the battles of Trenton and Princeton. Finally, Washington helped the United States by forcing the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Overall, his tactic of attrition helped to win the war.

For this reason, the British Parliament has been passing laws to place taxes on the American colonies. However, most American colonists didn’t agree to help the Britain to repay the debt.
The winter that George Washington’s soldiers spent at Valley Forge was backbreaking, cold, and the men had little clothing. Smallpox ran rampant, with a 40% death rate and a painful inoculation process. Because of the lack of clean water, the soldiers suffered from dysentery. After a few weeks, they had run out of meat, and were forced to survive on firecakes, a crude mixture of flour and water. Many froze or starved to death, causing the death rate to grow to 10 men per day.
“I, George Washington, the general of the Continental army, is here to tell you to fight on, evan when things seem bad, it’s at the worst times when things brighten up.” This is George Washington talking inspiration into his soldiers to keep fighting the good fight because he says, “Give up a cause to lose”. One of George Washington’s biggest mistakes was at Fort Necessity, where a massacre of his troops occurred. It was the first commanding officer position he had received and he chose an easily flanked position that was exploited and used against them by the French and Indians. Later within his lifetime he made sure that each position he entrenched himself within was more defensible and much more difficult to flank. Yossarian learns from flying his missions that joining this war was a mistake, however he is unable to capitalize on this realization because of the situation he had thrust himself into. Within Washington’s life were many mistakes, another of which was his intense desire to end the Revolutionary war with one decisive battle rather than a long drawn out conflict.

Our general, George Washington, had a plan to have our army block Cornwallis, the British general, from escaping from Yorktown by land while the French naval fleet blocked the British escape by sea. This meant that Washington had the British encircled. After three weeks of non-stop bombardment, both day and night, from cannon and artillery Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in the field at Yorktown on October 17, 1781. We had won the war for independance after 8 long years of fighting. My friends and I were ecstatic for the win, but we were also now able to go back to our families.

The final piece of advice given by George Washington is to stay neutral when it comes to foreign affairs. The country should not be too loyal to one particular country, and should not neglect any other: “Observe good faith and justice towards all nations...to lay hold of slight causes of umbrage... likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils(4th paragraph). If the country is too loyal to another, they could trick the U.S. and benefit from our mistake. The people should treat all countries equally so there is no conflict.
