Independent Study I These books have many ideas that they share. While reading I observed that a common theme was perseverance. Another frequent trait between the books is learning from one’s mistakes. I also noticed the many times that human flaws are mentioned throughout the books. Overall with these three ideas I was able to connect them personally and see how to learn more about myself as a whole. Perseverance was displayed through the many actions of George Washington and Yossarian. George Washington proved his perseverance throughout his entire life. The first large event within his life that he would have to persevere through was the death of his father. As a young man his father died and he was left to lead his family …show more content…
One of George Washington’s biggest mistakes was at Fort Necessity, where a massacre of his troops occurred. It was the first commanding officer position he had received and he chose an easily flanked position that was exploited and used against them by the French and Indians. Later within his lifetime he made sure that each position he entrenched himself within was more defensible and much more difficult to flank. Yossarian learns from flying his missions that joining this war was a mistake, however he is unable to capitalize on this realization because of the situation he had thrust himself into. Within Washington’s life were many mistakes, another of which was his intense desire to end the Revolutionary war with one decisive battle rather than a long drawn out conflict. George Washington, as many people know, was not a perfect human being, not in the slightest. The great Washington had many flaws, one of which was his intense pride. This was an asset and an enemy for Washington throughout his life. His pride prevented him from stepping down from a battle, which was a double edged sword as it allowed him to win multiple times, but also cost him dearly. One example of this was within his domestic life while he was working with a trading company, he constantly accused the trader of overcharging him, even though, according to documents, his prices were fair. This was just one example of how Washington’s pride was displayed. Yossarian and many of the company within Catch-22 exhibited flaws within their character. Yossarian was a coward that was terrified of death. Hungry Joe was a man who was plagued by nightmares of the worst kind and screamed terribly in his sleep. Major Major was flawed within his boredom that he disobeyed orders and caused an internal investigation. Colonel Korn was flawed in that he kept forcing his men to fly missions above the designated mark that they needed, just so that he could be the best and be promoted. Another major testament to human flaws is one meaning of Catch-22, wherein that a person must be grounded if they are insane, however when a person flies the bombing missions they are considered insane because they have
