Similarities between Carrying Guilt, Blame, and Closure Emotional burdens have many similarity between characters in different stories. They tend to go through stages that help overcome their emotions they carry on through their journey of life. In the two novels, “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed and “The Things They carried,” by Tim O'Brien, they carry heavy emotional loads of guilt, composed of grief, blame and closure. Cheryl carries the loss of her mother, the lead her to hike the trail at the age of 22. Her mother death came faster than from what the doctors said. It was like it happened in a blink of an eye. She was at peace with her mother. Cheryl and her mother did have issues, But she did give her love and that was what was important to her. In “Wild,” Cheryl Lastly, Cheryl did find closure after realizing she cant hate her mother property. She knew her mother did the best she can to take care of her. Cheryl said, “...and then get older and understand that she and done the best she she could and realize that what she had done was pretty damn good and take her fully back in my arms. (Stayed 267). It’s as if Cheryl then forgives her mother after Cheryl cursed her mother out, but then forgave her for her motherly things she had done. Tim then feels good about the book because telling the stories later on helped him. It was as if he is reliving his war stories. Both Cheryl and Tim relate to being able to let go of the past, by finding peace. It was as if the ones lost will always have a page in these two books telling their story as they are being able to cope with it. The similarities many characters carry on throughout their journey of life is emotional guilt, grief, blame and closure. In both novels, it is as they feel the guilt from the lost of their loved ones. They carried their emotional burdens with them throughout their journey. Everyone does have their ways of going through their emotional burdens , but then it is a reminder as well that they want to better themselves. It also does allow them to keep pushing and have motivation to want better, even though all they carry is their emotions it is as they Learn to survive and not give up on
