In Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild there is a clear connection with the author and nature that has guided her and led her astray throughout her life. Her memoir covers a pivotal time in her young life when she when from an immature young person to a woman who is self-reliant and able to be happy by her own means. The book is written mainly reflecting on her time on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) when she was between the age 22 and 26 years old also remembering childhood events. Cheryl’s journey starts when her mother suddenly dies of caner and she was only 22 years old. Soon after her brother and sister become estranged, she goes through a divorce, becomes a drug addict, and has an abortion. Cheryl Strayed got lost in the wild to find herself again. When she was a child her connection to the nature was about as close as a person could get at the time. She grew up without pluming and running water in her house in Minnesota . Her family was an outcast in the small community, which made her family grow closer together. She had a very close relationship with her mother and when she passed it led her on a path of self-destruction and disconnect from nature. This was one of the many times that she strayed from nature only to see that nature is where her home had always been. She is then a shadow of what her mother once knew. She had to go back to her own roots and learn how to make herself happy and not rely on everything around her. The PCT trail starts near the Mexican border and goes up to Canada. Cheryl was determined to hike the trail and in the end traveled about a thousand miles. She had to find herself in nature to feel normal again.
