The most influential is Pablo Picasso and his paintings. “Les Demoiselles was the precursor of a new style called cubism” (395). Cubism was a new style of modern art. With the spread of technology and finding its’ way into the art realm, it produced a new style art called “Futurism”. Since the Modernism era was about expression away from tradition, this idea was the birth of “expressionism” in art.

The period between 1915 and 1935 brought upon many great authors. Those such as William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Willa Cather, which all were modernist authors. They reflected their work over this time period along with bringing forth many great stories. The most notable author of this time period would be F. Scott Fitzgerald. In the early 20th century after the world war I, this was the period when modernism started. There was the industrialization, development of modern technology to solve problems and there was the modernist movement in writing also. This movement was characterized by a lack of confidence in the traditional ways of explaining existence and its meaning. Family, and religion were no longer seen as being dependable. Writers could not find any meaning in the old ways of writing, they did see the need to start writing in new techniques as the world was changing.

Among the factors that shaped modernism were the advancement of modern industrial societies and the swift development of urban areas, followed by reactions to horrors and trauma of World War I. Modernism furthermore dismissed the conviction of enlightening thinking, and many modernists rejected religious belief. It is a style or movement in arts that expects to break with established and conventional structures. This movement began when few writers felt that they required another type of writing to express their belief systems and outlook towards life. Modernism empowered writers to pursue highly individualistic types of writing.

Modernism began in early 1700s with the rise of capitalism. This was start of an age of rational thinking. The major belief of this age was to believe only those things which they could see. The idea of modernism is, to quote father of Modern Philosophy Rene Descartes, ‘I think therefore I am’(2). There were several different theme changes in literature during the late 1800’s and has continued through current day. The different themes used to describe the type of literature such as: Romanticism, Imagism, Modernism and Confessional poetry. There were many different styles of writing introduced during the time frame of when World War I began in 1865 and to the end of World War II. Romanticism and Naturalism were of the few first forms of American literature that emphasized originality and freedom of self-expression that began in the ending of the eighteenth century. America experienced some drastic changes in geographic areas, industrially and socially which was expressed thoroughly in literature.
