Art during the Second World War is a particularly unique method of historical preservation as it is a visual representation of cultural expression. The physical art itself is representative of the circumstances that led up to its production. Art is particularly useful at this time as a means of preservation and explanation and it presents an insight into the human experiences that existed within the war. Censorship and government regulation of the arts existed prominently in nations under dictatorial rule and this regulation represented the nature of politics at the time. Hitler believed that through the censorship and regulation of creative mediums in the nation he could maintain and secure Germany’s culture. Every piece of art made during this time was seen as a direct reflection of the German will and fighting spirit. This was not exclusive to art, the extreme nationalism and militarism that Germany put out to the world during this time extended to almost all aspects of German culture. Art as propaganda was exceptionally important to the German cause; any depictions of the Fuhrer Adolf Hitler were to have him displayed as grand, powerful, and invincible. The Germany army was displayed as extremely masculine, strong, and unfailingly nationalistic. The art was specifically designed to incite “further militarism and racial hatred”. He was often depicted as working diligently to protect the German people and the greatness of the Reich.
